So those of you that have the General Finishes Arm-R-Seal finish on your mods, how are you liking it?
Been thinking about just going with a Teak oil after this batch, doesn't offer as much protection but is much easier for the owner to upkeep for any light scratches and has a more natural wood feel.

The finish on my #40 VV is flawless Mike. #10...not sure what you put on it, but it's streaky and not as smooth, don't know if that was the same finish or not. #20 was also a flawless finish...pretty sure it and 40 are the same finish. I love it. I think it's gorgeous, but yeah, I hear on being able to deal with any scratches. I just know I love the finish on 40, but trust you to make the best decison for the mods.

I agree on the smell thing. But...40 had a smell on the inside from whatever it was treated with in there and it did go away in a few days and I know it's protected on the inside, so I didn't mind whatever that smell was (well, once it was gone). Had it stayed, I would have been a sad panda.

#10 I believe was just Arm-R-Seal but since then I have been doing two base coats of shellac then 3 coats of Armor-R-Seal, it does make for a nice smooth finish but if its dinged up and scratched its not easily fixed by the end user.
As for the smell, I don't think Teak Oil has a bad smell but some people are more sensitive to smells. Teak oil usually airs out in a few days unlike most Tung oils I've used that can take quite a long time.
I'm going to do mine out of this batch in a tung oil and see how it hold up compared to Amy's I made her. The door I made as a replacement on my beater was coated with Teak oil and I kind of like it. if it gets scratched really bad I can just rub it down with some 0000 steel wool and rub in some Howards feed and wax and it looks like new.

#37 had some odor from the finish for about the first 3 days after I got it from RIMP... I assume its Arm-R-Seal finish ? Whatever it is, looks really great. Longevity/durrability will have to seen. I definitley like it better than the tung oil and clear coat finishes. Of course really "oily woods" like wenge, ebony's etc... may require a different finish.?

The only wood that I have a very difficult time so far with the Shellac/Arm-R-Seal finish is Cocobolo and a little trouble with Bocote. It actually cures well on Wenge and help to smooth it out since it has the deep open grains.
Although after cutting into this Vera wood, I don't think I'd ever get these finishes to cure on that wood. Vera wood is the most waxy wood I have seen to date. I could probably not even apply a finish and just buff the wood itself.

Tung oil: That stuff is just wicked inside a mod. the bottle and the juice inside them absorb the smell and taste of it. Outside might be ok, I dont' know, but inside is a no go for me.
Yeah I wont do Tung oil again, I like the look and feel but not when its something that you are constantly putting up to your face.
