Good article, Elaine.

The only thing I disagree with is the author seems to think that Big tobacco is a major player in the battle against e-cigarettes. Frankly, I've not seen any indication that BT has weighed in one way or another. In fact, when the dust settles, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a Philip Morris e-cigarette. :p

I caught that too. He thinks that getting Amazon and EBay to drop e-cigs was the work of Big tobacco, when the ex-Executive Director of ASH took credit for that. Imagine the howls if he hears BT got credit for his work!

I also see this happening sooner rather than later. Once the FDA is finished with their drug delivery BS, BT will be jumping into the market with both feet right up to their wallets, Then BT will try to wipe out the independent juice vendors.

Not to get off topic, but speaking of tobacco companies, I'd actually like to see some of them get some spine back and sue these folks who are mandating that they print false info on their products, like having to say that smokeless is not any safer than smoked tobacco products. Just because tobacco companies were unethical and lied so much in the past doesn't mean that they should be forced to lie now. Both kinds of lies hurt consumers.

I also feel like initiating a campaign insisting that all items that contain tobacco be banned completely if they are as harmful as everyone keeps insisting they are. I'd like to call the bluff of all the 'activists' who want to save everyone from themselves. I want them to get the products off the shelves and forgo all of the tax revenues that are generated from tobacco, all in the name of improving public health. While we're at it, I also want vehicles taxed according to what kind of gas mileage they get (I really think that all personal property tax is bs b/c no one should be taxed on the same item year after year, but this is for the sake of argument). So all the pearl clutching soccer moms in trendy SUVs can pay waaay more in taxes that someone driving a more efficient vehicle that is causing less pollution and dilution of natural resources. Something tells me they won't think penalizing them for the impact of their personal choices is fair. And let's also start increasing taxes on those that want to have more than one or two kids so they can compensate for all the carbon footprints and increased resources needed to educate those kids.

You could wind up seeing them buyout or license the more popular flavors.

Well they have the resources both financial & human to do whatever they want, and will trademark or copy-write brand names and formulas to squeeze out the competition. This has always been there business model so I see no reason for them to change it.

I'm with you, Crumpet. I know there is sarcasm there, but the rational is there as well. How can one be justified but not the other....

Please note that this article appeared in a progressive (i.e. left wing) political blog. Most e-cigarette prohibitionists as well as most other opponents of tobacco harm reduction products also espouse left wing political views.

And as others have mentioned, Joshua Holland is wrong to claim that tobacco companies oppose e-cigarettes.

After (and perhaps while) the FDA promulgates tobacco regs for e-cigarettes, I anticipate that Reynolds and Philip Morris will quickly jump into the e-cigarette market.

Brilliant article. Essentailly all of the current hot issues regarding e-cigs in one well written and consise article.

As long as adults continue to want to consume nicotine - e-cigs are clearly a much healthier, environmentally cleaner and cheaper alternative to cigarettes and a more effective aid to quitting tobacco (not necesarrily nicotine, which by itself though is not everly harmful and is compared to caffeine) than even current NRTs.

All of the coutner arguments are hypocritial and absurd.

Kids might think they're cool and try using them. Well duh how many ,minors now smoke cigarettes. And they always will. Print as many pics of deiseased lungs as you like but the trend will continue.

Adult smokers might not quit 100% but get aqddicted to e-cigs instead. Well relapse rates with tobacco are so high that clearly e-cigs would be a much better alternative and also possibly a step to weaning oneself off of nicotine completely.

Ah man I could go on but you all already know the tune...

I have tried to post a reply to Valis and Patrick miller like 4 different times and it wont let me.

I am sorry but you are wrong, and to make it worse you are wrong in such away that it makes you look like a blind idiot. Valis Is a troll, and nothing more. If he claims he is not a troll then perhaps he would like to explain how he can come here and claim something that a two year old with simple math can prove wrong. as for your comments about Nicotine, Dude .... you ....ing boneheaded ...... Nicotine has been proven by the FDA, that is no less harmful than caffeine, and no less addicting. It is people like you that prove that if global warming is real we are all going to die.

The FDA's own tests prove that Ecigs are safer than Normal cigarettes. They simply spin it so you get what they want you to, welcome to the wonderful world of politics. But if you are to stupid to do the research yourself, then you deserve to go live in communist Russia. Because if you need the government to tell you what to do at all times, and you need the government to baby sit you, then you are a child who needs a nanny and communist Russia was the best at that very thing.

Politicians are out to make money just as much as any business man, the only difference is they hide it by telling you that you need them to control you. Hey news flash when they say that the normal person is not able to make these decisions, they mean you and your friends and family, They think that YOU are not able to look at facts and decide, and the ones that are they try to barry them in a mountain of lies. The worst part is you enable them to do it.

Simple math Ecigs give you 4 chemicals and none of them, not even Nicotine causes cancer. A normal cigarette gives you 4000, 400 of them can or do cause cancer. That is a difference of 3996 so please stop speaking untill you learn to do simple math, because your statements makes us all dumber for having heard them.

Personally... I really enjoy reading Comments to posts on the Net. Why? Because it gives me information. The comments tells me how informed or uninformed the public is on a subject. Equally, the comments are important because the general public (who reads the comments) are being educated.

A comment that starts out...
"Were you born an idiot or did you have to take lessons"...
is harsh. However, it screams "listen-up" here's the truth!

A wise man once told me
We are all the same but some are different
