well I have not bought a pack of smokes in over 2 years, so $5 may be low here in TX as well.
But when I was smoking I went through a pack a day.:)

Last I bought were last summer (2014), $5.69 at Walgreens -- cheapest cig prices I've ever found. They're probably at least $6/pk by now.

My story:
I love vaping so much and I wanted my father-in-law (wife's dad, great man) to quit smoking and start vaping. I gave him my starter Kanger EVOD and a bottle of tobacco juice. He used it, and told me he liked it and when the coil burned out, he decided buying a pack of cigarettes was better than changing the coil.
He bought patches in the past and never even put them on. He has said on many occasions that he wanted to quit but would not make an attempt.
Long story short, he put the vape I gave him in a drawer and hasn't looked at it since.
You can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink. They have to be thirsty.

All you can do is lead by example. Also it helped me when my kids forbid me to smoke in their cars and in their homes (or in my home when they were there).

My guess is, if he has been smoking for 20 years, he's in his 40's. Give him another 20 years and he'll be ready. When I was 60, I was really ready to switch.

Yes... many, MANY people *SAY* they want to quit... but they don't really, they're just mouthing the politically correct feeling. But put themselves to any trouble to make it happen? Too much trouble. That's why I said that even those of us who've actually chosen to make the switch have to have a large amount of motivation to really make it stick. Habits that last for decades are very hard if not impossible to break, and emphasizing those habits with dependence-producing substances makes it that much harder. It has to be approached from many different angles, or it doesn't work -- no matter HOW you try to quit cigarettes, not just with e-cigs. E-cigs are by far the easiest way to do it, but there is simply no substitute for personal commitment.

Hello my dad has been smoking for about 20 years and I think its time for him to make the switch to vaping. I have tried giving him a vape but he says its not the same but for me it is. So how can i get him to make the switch?

Stop trying to live someone's life for them.

You have to be willing and he is not and all you will do is piss him off

With mine it took his nagging wife, not sure if it fits your situation. Mom always wanted to stop but found herself unable until she tried my ego at the time. Next dad 'had' to give up his smokes to keep the peace in the house lol. So now they both evodding away and seem quite contented.

Richmond, Va...Right in Altria's back yard.
It took us almost losing my mom to COPD for my dad to take up vaping.

She had been falling asleep for months and kept telling us that she wasnt sleeping well. She came over to my house once and kept nodding off so bad that I wouldnt let her drive home.

Honestly, we thought that she might be getting Alzheimers.

Instead she was starving her body and brain for oxygen and if it hadnt happened as gradually as it did, she wouldnt be alive today. When she was admitted her oxygen level was around 60 percent.

She quit cold turkey, had no other choice really.

I have been trying with my wife, she is on board, but has not found something that works for her yet. I have started thinking of buying new stuff for her as satisfying my shinyitis, every device I buy her becomes my new backup (unless she loses it, I still miss my evod)
Have patience, make the information available but certainly don't push. If you seem to be trying to make the choice for him you will sour him on the whole idea.
The vaping journey is unique for each of us, and what worked for you will not work for everyone. Use what you know about him, his tastes and habits. If he isn't someone who likes to tinker, don't hand him a mech with a dripper on it. Choose flavors he is likely to enjoy, and put your own tastes out the window. I have a massive sweet tooth, so dessert vapes all the way. My wife likes menthol, won't even try any of the sweet flavors that I like. Don't give up, but keep your expectations low. This is not, and never can be, your decision. Just be supportive, and give only the help that is welcome. When he is ready to switch he will, until then keep the door open. Good luck with it.

not until he is ready... and besides, vaping is not like smoking... if it was, then smoking would be like vaping... and its not

too many people go into vaping wanting it to be a direct replacement... taste, texture, throat hit.. and they become dissappointed that it isnt the exact same and give up on vaping...

basically, vaping is a nicotine replacement item with characteristics kinda similar to smoking, inhale, feel a TH, exhale, see "smoke"....
