I think my attitude or resolve is just different this time.

Originally I quit smoking for 10 years without a single cheat; not even a drag -- and I was working in a bar full of smoke. Then my life fell apart and I said give me a frickin' cigarette!

I quit again January 2008. With the help of nic gum and now vaping I'm have managed to go 6 months at a time without sneaking a smoke.

When I am around cigarettes now they are just not gross like they were the first time I quit. They smell great and I want one. They are also not evil and dirty to me like they were before.

My best guess is that I just haven't divorced myself from them like I did the first time. I am around smoke a lot less now at work and at home but I still LIKE it now.

Another possibility is that I started smoking menthol the second time I got addicted. I have noticed that I just don't get the same morning buzz from other cigarettes that I do from Newports. There is a lot of controversy over whether Newports are particularly addictive and have more habit forming chemicals than just nicotine.

I am not smoking them now but still smoke other menthols when I can get my hands on one.

Any thoughts on this?

The last thing that is different with my 2nd attempt is my spiritual motivation. I don't mean to sound like a religious freak but when I quit for 10 years I prayed the day before and "gave it up to God." I did not continue praying while quitting. It just took that once.

Now you could say God and I are in a little spat. I have tried to capture what we had before but too much has happened I just can't reconnect.

I am just putting this out there. I don't expect you all to be able to answer this one with any certainty but maybe someone else has experienced the same thing.

I'm going to step outside for a breath of stinky air now. :)

I am sneaking little half smoked butts from my roommate every day! Also, whenever I go to a bar I smoke outside right along with everyone else. It's really stupid because they taste like crap and really stink.

You definitely have a problem with qutting cigarette if you are sneaking butts. The only time I did this was one time I ran out of cigarettes and did not have a vehicle for about an hour and I was smoking butts of cigarettes. How long have you been vaping. What strength are you vaping.

Hello mmmelaney!

I understand your little spat perfectly. Been in one of those off and on for the last 33 years, since my dad died when I was a kid. I also understand the giving it up for God part. In (or with - depending upon your chosen version of the Bible) God, all things are possible. That kind of thinking can give you just the little bit of extra strength you need when temptation is at its strongest.

I would tend to look at it like this: "I used to smoke at least a pack a day. Now, I'm smoking 3 partial cigarettes a day. So, in general, I've cut down from 20 or more cigarettes to maybe 1 or 2 overall. That in itself is quite an accomplishment and I should be proud of that. Maybe soon, I'll be able to lay them aside altogether."

Don't punish yourself for perceived failings. Rejoice in yourself for what you have accomplished instead.
