If you have 100mg nic liquid and want to bring it down to a more manageable level you simply cut it with PG or VG. Say you have 30 ml of 100 mg. If you add 30 ml of PG (or VG) to it you'll have 60 ml of 50 mg. If you add 60 ml of PG (or VG) to that, you'll have 120 ml of 25 mg nic liquid. It's just a ratio problem like in math class.

It works the same way with the PG/VG ratio. If you have 30 ml of 100 mg PG nic liquid and add 30 ml of VG to it, you'll have 60 ml of a 50/50 PG/VG blend at 50 mg.

I hope this makes sense.

Well, you could download Scubabatdan's calculator that is in the sticky's where you can see the equations embedded in the cells or the math is pretty straightforward.

When we use "mg" we actually mean "mg/ml" so if you know your starting nicotine level and the level you want to lower it to, the "target" then it is like any other ratio formula. If I wanted 10ml of 6mg/ml liquid, I need 6mg/ml*10ml=60mg of nicotine in the final solution. If I start with 60mg/ml then 1ml will give me that and the other 9ml are my USP PG and/or VG.

The nicotine math:
Final_MG_Per_ML = Total_MG_of_Nicotine / Total_ML

Always start from the desired final product, then it works backward into how much of your nicotine base to use.

Say I want 30 ml total of 24 mg/ml elqiuid.
24 mg/ml = Total_MG_of_Nicotine / 30 ml (Total_ML) so Total_MG_of_Nicotine = 24 mg/ml x 30 ml = 720 mg of nicotine needed.

If I have 60 mg/ml nicotine base, then I need 720 mg / 60 mg/ml = 12 ml of my nicotine base.

I now know I need 12 ml out of that 30 ml total to be nicotine base, leaving me 18 ml for everything else. Everything else = flavorings plus filler (PG, VG, or some of each).

(As used here, VG and PG both mean VG USP and PG USP -- I only use the USP, pharmaceutical grade, versions of these items.)

Most people can use PG, and most people like some kind of PG/VG blend, say 70% PG, 30% VG. To make life simpler, it is handy to buy the nicotine base in all PG (or all VG).

Say you want that 70% PG, 30% VG. In a 30 ml batch, 70% PG = 0.7 x 30 ml = 21 ml of PG, which means 9 ml of VG. The nicotine used up 12 ml of the PG portion, so you have another 9 ml of PG stuff to add.

Next flavorings. Some flavorings are pretty concentrated, but a lot of the perfumers apprentice, capellas, and Seedman mixes that I use I end up with about 20% total flavoring. There are many recipes posted in this DIY area, and various other forum areas (like PIF) have threads dedicated to DIY recipes. The vast majority of flavorings are PG based -- any of them you use you subtract from the 9 ml of PG left to use, while any that are VG based (like Natures Flavors), you subtract from the 9 ml of VG space.

At the end you'll end up with a bit of residual, some ml of PG or VG still needed to reach the 30 ml. You just "top it off", a little bit of plain PG and plain VG to hit the total batch size of 30ml.

The recipe threads are typically done specifying % of a given flavor. For instance I do a tobacco with 15% Seedman commercial cigarette (PG based), 3% capellas hazelnut (PG based), and 2 drops per 10ml (6 per 30) of perfumers apprentice tobacco absolute diluted (in pure grain alcohol); the tobacco absolute is such a small amount that I ignore it from the math.

15% seedman = 0.15 x 30ml total = 4.5 ml.
3% hazelnut = 0.03 x 30 ml total = 0.9 ml -- rounding up slightly, to 1 ml, is harmless.

So, I had 9 ml of PG left, have just added 5.5 ml of Seedman Commercial cigarette and Hazelnut, so I will need about 9 - 5.5 = 3.5ml of plain PG. I haven't added any VG-based flavorings, so I will add a full 9 ml of plain VG. Don't forget the 6 drops of tobacco absolute. Shake and vape! (it'll be better after a day or so of steeping, sitting there, but this is a simple mix that is pretty much good to use right off.)

Follow the above and you'll have 30ml of 24 mg/ml markfm tobacco 5 :)

Thank you for the explanation. I really stink at math so that's probably why I was so confused. I'd probably be better off using calculator. So if I had 30 ml of 48 mg of 50/50 nic base I would mix 30 ml of pg or vg to it to make 60 ml of 24 mg base, then add percentages (say 15 or 20% flavoring) and the other 80-85% would be the nic base, right? If I had 50/50 nic base and wanted a 70pg/30vg nic base how much pg would I need to add?

You should need to add 27ml of pg and 3ml of vg to your nic to get 60ml of 24mg 70PG/30VG
