How do you stop a coil turning in to a spring when you let go of it.

I thought I would try my own coils and I am having a surprisingly miserable time of it.
I wrap it around a hex wrench like in a video I watched but when I let go of it the coil opens up like a spring.
I have tried squeezing it but it seems to almost always lead to some kind of short in it.
How do you guys do it because I have watched a ton of videos and it never seems to happen to them at all.

I use a screwdriver. It lets me put a lot of tension on the wraps. Do not cut the wire before wrapping the coil and use the spool to add a lot of tension. This heavy tension seems to work well, I almost never have to take the tweezers to the coils. I do not pre-torch the wire prior to wrapping just a few pulse dry fires.
