How Do You Wick?

This week, I started using an rda (mutation x v4) and I love the customization of it, but I've been having a hard time finding good guides to wicking, most people focus on coil building (I used to work with electronics so I picked up on building fairly quickly). I've been using the "Z" or bridge wick, but do you guys have any cool or unusual wicking styles?

With the Mutation v4, I find the best wick is 2 separate strands for dual coils, threaded through and each end curled back underneath the coils into the juice well.
Now, you can run quad coils on the Mutation v4 and in that case, I would still use 2 strands, run through both coils and curl the ends back underneath into the juice well.
I've done the 'Z', the 'X' and even a dragon wick on the Mutation v4 but always go back to curling back underneath.
I find that it has better juice flow through the wick.
But, as with anything else in vaping, it all comes down to personal preference.

IMO, wicking is more important than the coil build. Once you determine desired OHM rate and mass, figure out what wire combination gets you there, It just about making a spiral of wire. The wicking needs on the other hand can be different for each atomizer, for each build, each power level and even the juice you are using.

For the most part it's, atomizer, Mood or time that determines how I wick.... On my Sat22 I use mesh exclusively. Steam turbine, mesh or silica. On my Kayfuns mostly cotton, but if I want more maintenance free I'll use silica. On my Bottom feed/Dripper attys could be silica, mesh or cotton.

I wick rayon in practically everything as I like it better than cotton. In my Mutations I usually build dual horizontal coils. I put a separate wick in each coil and return both tails to the deck. I have occasionally built quads in the Mutations, and then I usually pull a single wick through both, but pull some slack in between them, returning both tails and the belly to the deck; an "M" or "inverted camel" wick. I have never had a lot of luck with Z or X wicks but, when I am building dual verticals for flavor I will use a horseshoe wick. With cotton, you have to be careful not to overstuff the coil. Cotton swells when wet and it you get the coil too full it will "choke" and not wick past the very ends of the coil, burning the cotton in the center. The cotton should fill the coil, but still slide freely inside it, without pulling the build stand or mod around on the table trying to move it. Rayon shrinks when wet, and thus the coils should be pulled a bit fuller. Rayon also wicks a lot better than cotton, and the tails should be thinned to 1/4 volume or so before returning to the deck. Really, it's hard to thin them too much. They'll wick strong with just a couple of fibers touching the deck.

I am testing a pair of Old Skool stainless mesh wicks in the Troy2 dripper-- it's build like a Genny, with the negative posts (which are actually the positive posts in that machine) close down to the deck and a tall center post in between them-- but I haven't decided whether I like them enough to go to the trouble. I also have a set of ceramic wicks I acquired somewhere I will try in the Troy2 one of these days.

Using Rayon right now for the first time. Stuff is awesome! Incredible wicking. Just checked it and its almost bone dry but was still getting a big flavorful vape!

 I prefer Rayon (cellucotton), too. I find that you need to use a bit more Rayon than you would cotton, as it shrinks up when it is wet.

I do mine a little strange usually... Build a dual coil with both the coils on the same side of the build deck... and then I take a single piece of Cotton and strand it through both the coils. Clip of the ends, Tuck it under, Push the coils down. good to go.

Very interesting seriously. What advantage to you find doing this?

For me I have to say that initially the Mutation X V4 proved a failure and I actually binned it in frustration. It leaked no matter how I wicked it, I couldn't get it to fire dual coils simultaneously and the draw just didn't work for me. A friend found the same with the one he tried and gave it to me for spares.

I felt sorry for the thing, thought about it and tried it. I made dual coils, made sure they sat over the air holes, wicked them simply with a horseshoe style wick to each side well clear of the holes and using the supplied extra cap changed the drip tip. Bingo! It worked great. So much so I bought another one - so don't give up!

Well, first, Its about the cotton. I never have issues with one side going dry before the other, it all goes dry at the same time. Only have to drip on one side. I find the flavor to be better too. But maybe I am lying to myself. Thats just how I like doing it I guess. The cotton holds a lot of juice. uniform and nice.

Another benefit... is the leads. I can snip them the same time. I find it a little bit troublesome once i got one coil in and try to push another on through the center, holding the first coil in place, and then trying to snip the leads...

Here i put it in, tighten, chop chop... good to go.

Right now, I have 3 RDAs in rotation. 2 are set like that, one isnt, and thats not because its impossible. there isnt much of a difference.. I just like it that way i guess.
