When mixing, how important is it to hit 20%? For example, I'm thinking about mixing a couple of TFA flavors (Blueberry extra, waffle) and the recommendations I found are
Blueberry 10-13%
Waffle 20%
If I follow the recommendations for percentages, I'm up over 30. Other flavors have much lower recommendations and would put me well under 20%.

Appreciate any clarity from the master mixologists out there! :)

most mixes are best @ 15-20% flavor as a general guideline. this should be your total flavor percentage. mixing different flavors requires you to determine how much of each not to exceed the total flavor percentage. from experience (and i have sent a few mils down the drain) too high a flavor concentration tastes pretty bad. its always easier to add something than to take it away. be sure to write down your recipe to be able to tweak it later and so you don't lose that magical perfect mix. best of luck.:D

I believe the flavor percentages your looking at are peoples recommendations for single flavor juices. When you start making multiple flavor mixes you want to scale down those percentages. Exactly how much, only you can decide.

Cheers,
Steve

What he said seems sensible to me, too.

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for. When mixing multiple's, should you try to stay at or below 20%?

That question is impossible for me to answer, but I'll try  . The thing is different companies flavors and evem flavors within the same company can be more or less concentrated. Add that to the fact that everyones tastes are different. What I can say is my highest flavoring percentage is around 20-21% for my taste. Hope that helps a little. :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

Here's what I suggest you try.

Mix the TFA Waffle @ 10% let it steep and see if it needs adjusting.
Mix the TFA Blueberry Extra @ 5% let it steep and see if it needs adjusting.

Once you get the flavors to your liking in a separate bottle add some of the Blueberry mix and some of the Waffle mix.

There is no 20% rule. I've been mixing for over 4 years and never heard of such a silly rule.

First advice, whomever informed you about a 20% rule, start ignoring them.

Second advice, learn the math and you'll find out a 50/50 mix of the two juices in your OP don't add up to over 30% and actually add up to less than 20%. (above this post is one that gives the beginnings of how it works)

Third, just start mixing, experimenting, and taking notes. Let your notes and experience create your mixing rules.

There is no rule either you over flavor or under flavor. You can over flavor at 3% you can under flavor at 30% it all depends on the flavoring. 20% has been used as a guide line and I don't even know where that came from or who started it. I used to follow the so called 20% rule until I realized it has no bearing on mixing. I had a few flavors from laranne that I though I would wind up over flavoring so I stopped at 20% and to my surprise when I decided heck with it let me add more I wound up going to 30% before I got any resemblence of flavor and after 2 weeks steep the taste remained the same as the first day I mixed it.
