So i tried for the 1st time to use the rba coil that came with my subtank mini, apparently i used to much cotton because it was too hard to pull from it when i put it back together, I could hardly suck any air from it. Is there a rule of thumb or anything u should know in how much cotton to use?

It also depends on what KIND of cotton. The stuff from CVS or KGD. I mostly use KGD and in my KFL I use an average amount of cotton. Slight resistance when pulled through the coil. Trial and error as noted. In my Squapes I use MORE cotton because of the way this RBA is designed. In my RM2 which is a bottom fed dripper for squonkers, I use very little cotton for the tails.

Yes, I know it sounds like a bunch of double speak confusing stuff but that's the way we roll. :) If you can't nail it, don't get discouraged. Post clear pics of your build and I'm sure that someone who uses your topper will help but the pic is the magic ticket. Pretty soon you will be able to wick your build properly with your eyes closed.

Good luck.

I did like you said and what i saw in the video, slight resistance , pulled it through cut it off and tucked it in. Works much better in my second attempt with the dual coils.

Great! Keep experimenting. It's part of the journey. Trust me. Most of the ECF tribe would admit to numerous builds on a given topper before they found the one they like. The goal is to make YOU happy and not me. Repeatable every single time you build. I think it took me 8 builds on my Squape to find the one that works for me. /lol It's a tricky beast to build for properly.

Use enough to get resistance when pulling through coil, but not enough that it actually alters the coil or gets stuffed up.

I'd add that to get the effect Moto is referring to, you don't want your wick to be much more than a milimeter or so wider than the coil it's going into. That'll give you a nice, snug fit, with great wicking properties that will cut down on dry hits.

So i guess it's just trial and error until i get it right?

This is the ONLY answer. It applies to ALL parts of Vaping. What works for me will suck for you and be OK for the next and the most mind blowing vape someone ever had.

I use Cotton Balls.. i unroll the ball and tear a bit off, say 1/4"-3/8" wide, gently roll it and then gently pull it through the coil, if it hangs up I back out peel a bit off and reinsert. Is a, you get a feel for it, thing.

Trying to describe accurately in words how much wick material to use is actually quite difficult, it's sort of like trying to describe the feeling of a 1000hp race car taking off from the line, you just have to experience it to really know what you're dealing with. You can watch video after video after video, and still you will not have 'the feel' which I believe is detriment for a quality wick installation.

Trial and error is one of the best ways, the absolute best way possible would be to watch an experienced builder wick the device and before the wicks were cut you had an opportunity to pull the wicking back and forth to feel the resistance it has inside the coil. Pretty much anything else anyone tells you, or any video you watch will never give you 'the feel' which is required to know how much wicking material is optimal. Worst of all, different wick materials can all perform at their best with a different amount of wick in the coil, so it can be time consuming to learn.

Take your time, it's a process that can be frustrating the but end result is a very satisfying feeling of truly knowing how to wick an RDA properly.

I think the KangerTech's STm is an excellent way to get people away from their comfort zone. I was concerned I'd suck at using an RDA. I purchased my iStick 50w, and Black mini. I wasn't ready for learning 18650s yet, so I said no to the kit. I got them in the mail, and tried to RBA. I failed, horrifyingly, over and over. I used the coils, once they gave I bought wire and cotton. Used nearly a third of the roll. I gave up and bought an RDA. Was difficult, but easier, and learned through that. I went back to the RBA, and actually got it to be perfect on the first try. With that said, I don't remember my exact wicking... I quit using mine due to the horrible insulator. Apparently still a thing on the Black and White model of the minis. If I could get an insulator that didn't taste like crap.... I'd appreciate it. Would be nice to have a good RBA laying around for mini. I'm sticking to stock coils for now though.

I'd like to ask for some opinions about wick density concerning different builds.

I usually wick a coil to have a decent resistance within the coil. Basically to fill the coil and to "puff" out on the ends. Lately I've been experimenting with more density with more power.

On some of my contact coils I've been using a thicker density, not enough resistance to pull and distort the coil, but more dense than usual. I find that it does not choke the coil either. The type of builds I do this with are usually 26 gauge and 24 gauge contact wraps. Upon taking the wicks out there is no scorching.

I guess what I'm getting at is with certain builds you can use a thicker density than usual.

Use Japanese cotton for STM. It's the best way to go on this tank IMO

+1!:thumb:

That's all that I use, is Japanese cotton, the 'Koh Gen Do' type, can be found on eBay at decent pricing. I use this for all of my coil needs, be it the Kangertech 2 & other small types of single coils, as well as the original Kangertech 3 dual cores, RBA's, any coil that's rebuildable & will be using this for my new Kangertech OCC (1.2 ohm) vertical coils, as soon as I generate a pack of 5 to rebuild. That's the way I do, it's easier (for me) to rebuild 5 than one or two.

Sometimes I'll order an accessory & some Japanese cotton will be included, this I use also. As long as the cotton is fed through properly as MotoMudder described, then primed good & installed on the tank, let sit a couple of minutes, you'll experience pure flavor, with no nasty taste, like silica has, which requires a break in.

I've never tried any other cottons, though have a small bag that was given to me, came from a dentist's office, a friend said it was great because it was 'sterile'. Yet while that stuff may be good for what it is designed for, I'd imagine it would have a strong chemical taste & my only use for it is to cleanup a small spill.

The other cool thing about cotton, a little goes a long way. I have 4-5 packages, my e-juice distributor told me that was a 9 month to a year's supply for me.
