you dont really need to oxidize the whole wick, just torching the end that goes under the coil then pulsing out the hotspots is usually all I do. the discoleration is partly from the wick and partly from the cooked juice around the coil dripping back into the tank, certain tanks are worse then others as each wick is rolled dfferent, i have some that go days and some that do it in hours.

usually every other tank I will take a syringe and shoot water into the tank forcing it out of the wick while holdng it upside down over the sink, rinsing it out in effect, and this has helped alot for keeping discoleration down.

since i dont really oxidize anymore i dont really worry about the chromium issues if there are any. the wire itself has a diverse blend of minerals as well so...............

What are you using to torch your stainless? I tried my first one with a lighter which left awful residue on the wick.

I have since bought a butane torch from. Harbor freight for $8 then bought some 99.8% clean butane from my local "tobacco water pipe" store

Seems to work pretty well
