Question.... when the batteries get low does it turn off after a couple seconds of pressing the button then after you turn it off then on it does the same thing? It has been working like a champ and I've tried another brand new atomizer and its doing the same thing. I have been smoking heavily on it since about 4:00pm and its 11:00pm. They are brand new 10440 protected batteries.

That could be due to the 10440 needing charged. They would more or likely last around that long.
Try charging them and then if this still happens the trouble shooting begins.
But that seems like the first thing and around the correct time for the batteries to start needing charged. Although all my 5 volts use the 14500 so far.

Sounds like you made a good mod. :toast:

WHOOOOOOHOOOOOO I just built my first mod from this guide and successfully!!!! I can't belive I did it! Never soldered or touched anything like this and I did it!!! I'm vaping at 5v for the first time at 4:38AM Sunday Jund 6 a day before my birthday!!! WHOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO Thank you for giving me this guide that allowed me to do my FIRST mod!!!! First pic and video will be posted with review of the challenges I had as a first timer. :) :)

Hehe, good job Soundwave. Now have fun using it on your Birthday. :)

Re the batteries. Conman was right. I get about 5 hours of heavy vaping using any of the 10440, 5 volt boxes I've built. So if it starts doing anything wonky after 5 hours or so, just change batteries. That almost always works. I say almost, because sometimes, it's the atty.

Is there any other way to maximize the life span of the battery life? I love the mod but I can't stand having to recharge all the time... maybe a bigger battery that will fit into the case? Also do you have any future guides coming in the near future? Maybe a 5v version of High Pings bottom feed guide? :D

No real way to avoid the battery life of the 10440's. I get around it somewhat by keeping 3 or 4 sets in constant rotation. If I go out for the day, it's easy enough to stick 4 extra batteries in my pocket, they're pretty small. You can get extra batteries really cheap at HighTechDealZ with fast, free shipping and good service. You won't find a better price on protected Li-Ions anywhere, except maybe China. But get em quick if you want any, because when he gets them in, he sells out fast, and then it takes a few weeks to restock. Pretty sure sure he just got new stock a few days ago, but he already only has 20 something 10440's left.
And I do use a bigger 14500 box sometimes, but I just like the look and feel of the smaller box so much better.

Awesome mod! I just built my first-ever mod from these plans, and it works great. Great first-timer mod, simple & effective. I've got a bunch of 10440's on order (from China, may be a while, lol), so I'm using the small batteries from 510 USB passthroughs for now (they work!).

This was great for discovering that I like 5v. Mind you now, I 'like' it, I'm not married to it. I'm more in 'survival' mode here, learning to build my own stuff if the FDF'nA gets it's precious ban rammed down our throats. Bearing that in mind, I tried a few things:

I got a small piece of copper to use as a 'jumper' of sorts, and put it in one of the battery slots if I wanted to drop it to 3.7v and get a little more time out of it. If I was out of town & this was all I had, 2 batts could last quite a while like this :). I just tried a couple of standard Energizer AA's in it... very cool, not much vapor, but it still works. In a pinch, I'd rather take weak-... vape off of cheap AA's than buy a pack of analogs.* This little mod was cheap and easy to build, and has a few easy-to-do operational options... I'm definitely going to build a few more of these, pack 'em up with a spacer, batteries, and a little juice, and keep them as "survival rations". I travel a lot, and constantly dread having a brain-fart where I'm at the beginning of a 18-hour day on the road and realize I've left my juice / batts/ charger at home... man that sucks. One in the overnight bag, one in the glove-box of Bob the Truck....

To be honest, it was my second attempt. I completely f'd up the first one by NOT FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY....heh, my own fault.

Great Mod! I'll recommend this design as a first-try for anyone interested in modding.

*I think my next one will be a 4xAA box, with two 'spacers'. Multiple voltage options up to 5v, and able to take 3 regular AA's for 4.5v if I''m in 'survival mode'... lol...

Ok I'm currently in the process of building one of these. I cut down the board to 4 holes X 5 holes almost soldered everything. How the hell do u have room for the switch?? My 510 battery connector and the pcb take up too much room. Is everyone else installing the switch and having the regulator just a lil on top of it? Also i'm having the hardest time soldering my ground wire to the inside gold 510 connector. I'm even using flux. I think I'm just gonna solder to the outside. Hopefully I'll be done soon. Whew!

Ok got everything together this thing hits hard. Smack down on your throat! Lovin' it!

Sweeeet!

Yeah, the first one I screwed up by drilling the switch hole in the wrong place... mine (the working one) is just below the atty connector, otherwise you can't fit the pcb in. Don't this thing rock? Try taking a thick piece of copper (mine is some 3/8 tubing, flattened and bent to shape, from my still... oops, can I say that?), and put it in one of the battery slots. I metered it at 3.7v without load... better than a stock 510 battery, and you can make that pair of 10440's last all day if you have to in a pinch!

Ok I'm having the same issues with mine shutting off after 3 seconds. This started happening after vaping in mine for 2 hours. I took out the batteries and charged them over night. Still same thing. I'm using 510 cartomizers. What could be causing this?

Same thing happens with mine, but I'm using 3 AAA's for 4.5v. I think it's the current draw being too much for the switch or the batteries. Any ideas?

Ok I've come to the conclusion it's the atty's. The atty's with a higher OHm value work great. The ones with a lower ohm's set off the the protection circuit in the batteries. U are using regular alkaline AAA? if that's so then maybe it's your switch. What amp is it rated?

It's the Fairchild regulator when used as shown/following this guide. Using Joye 510's there are more watts that need to be dissipated (especially with freshly charged batts) than the chip can handle as built. Read the spec sheet.

FWIW 10440's are pretty useless, and overpriced batts. 14500's are a much better choice.

This problem even happens with 14500's. Note this from a site that sells 5V Fairchild mods.

NOTES AND CAUTIONS

Always keep the master switch OFF when not actively using the device! This will this prevent the battery from draining when not in use and is
a good safety measure. To be sure the box will not accidentally go off when you are not using it, remove the atomizer when you are done vaping.

The voltage regulator used in this device has a current limit, which acts as another layer of protection against short circuits and other problems.
One downside to this is that lower resistance atomizers can sometimes hit this limit, which will cause the device to shut off after a second or
two of pressing the button. This problem has been reported (although very rarely) with certain Joye 510 atomizers, as they have the lowest
resistance of the traditional atomizers that people use. No specific atomizer is guaranteed to work with this device, as resistance can vary
greatly due to manufacturing errors, and note that many vendors will NOT honor warranties for atomizers if they are used at high voltage. If
you use 510 atomizers, we recommend the use of so-called "clone" 510 atomizers, such as SLB and Bauway. These atomizers are closer to 3 Ohms,
as opposed to a Joye 510 which is usually between 2.1-2.3 Ohms. 901 and 801 atomizers are in the 3 Ohm range as well and should not have this
problem.

This statement is interesting.

It's a 3A regulator, it can handle 2.4A in a properly designed box. Which neither of these are. It's not hitting a 'current limit', it's going into thermal shut down.
