Just an update (and a sidetrack):
I have now cleaned two atomizers for the dse901, and they definitely got cleaned up! Theres still that black crud on the heatcoil though. Both atomizers seemed to have lost their wick action, and were apparently unable to draw liquid down to the coil. One of them is now put aside to dry for a while. I decided to butcher the other one (!) to have a look inside, however, i only got to removing the steel wool "roll bar". Under the steel wool there is another roll bar made of some sort of metal, which should still be able to protect the coil from physical damage. Something told me i needed to try the atomizer in this state, i.e. without the steel wool. So i dripped 2 drops on the coil and put in a fresh cartridge, and behold: more smoke than ever!
I'm now testing this (butchered) atomizer, and trying to assess two things: will the e-liquid seep out everywhere, and does the e-cig now use more liquid? Something tells me that the large amounts of smoke should result in more liquid being used. Also, if the steel wool acted as some sort of sponge, the atomizer should be losing control of where the fluid goes.
So far, however, i'm getting a lot of smoke from an atomizer, which for all intents and purposes was unusable :)

Wilco!
-The cleaned atomizer was unable to draw fluid down onto the heat coil, therefore it was unusable to me.

-I proceeded to remove the steel wool in the atomizer, and test it in this state (no steel wool, but otherwise unmodified).

-It now produces a lot of smoke and is now working better than ever.

How's that? Better?

Nice one Clavit! So cleaning the atomisers doesn't actually bring them back to life? But butchering them does? :)

Apparently yes!?
The ultrasound cleaning did improve them in the smoke department, but the cleaned atomizers didn't seem to draw fluid to the heating coil. I'm no fan of dripping, so for me, it wasn't much of an improvement.
That's why i decided to try and take one apart!
I'm wondering why the steel wool is there in the first place.I guess time will tell, if my modified e-cig burn/explodes/melts/whatever ;-)

I'm only going to try one of my mini's that's not vaping much anymore...as soon as I get the device. I knew I saved it for a reason!

But I do have to say that I recommend the distilled white vinegar method. After a few days, atomizers are still rolling good and no gross taste.

It seems to me that a death blow for atomizers is letting liquid evaporate overnight and leave solids of crud on the atomizer.
Maybe sealing in a plastic bag or tupperware would serve them better than the overnight draining.
Leaving my extra atomizers sealed in a plastic bag does seem to have kept them moist.. The amount of liquid visible in the tube when I bagged the atomizers seemed about the same when I removed them.

Plastic bags aren't very convenient for use in a carry pouch so yesterday I rolled each extra atomizer in a small bit of old-fashioned cling wrap. They may be in the pouch for days so it doesn't seem too much hassle.

on the other side of the fence i have some that have been used and simply put down for several weeks without any precautions at all and they show no signs of drying up.. connect a battery and they simply work..

my opinion on the leaving to drain every night is that its simply wasting good usable liquid.. i see no usefill thing being achieved at all..

It wouldn't surprise me if all the easy tips I go for are useless.

most of them probably are jamie.. folks do tend to read.. believe.. then pass on.. the forum system is perfect for this.. the good tips get lost among the bad tips..

for this very reason u wont find anything from me amongst the tips section..

Just a thought you are probable all over already is, how about using the vinegar solution in your ultrasonic device?

you know,i used to do all this stuff religiously...draining atomisers at night etc, just in case...but i havnt bothered for a long while now,and its made no difference at all,in any way,to any of my ecigs or how they perform or last...i think its all a complete waste of time.

if they block, blow them out-if that doesnt work, wash them if you can be bothered-if that doesnt work, bin them....simple as that.

as for cleaning...well,when it comes to that stage,i reckon the atomiser is on its deathbed anyway...better to just see about getting a new one, throw the old one away, and stop wasting your time and effort.
