How to disassemble a batt?

Okay, here's how it goes:

Got an auto XL batt. Stupid me drops auto XL batt. Dead; gonner; maybe?

I've tried other methods of reviving but have failed. However, now that means I would like to take the batt apart. I can get the LED cap off just fine, but the top looks like it's pressed fit. Has anyone found a reliable way to remove the top piece w/o damaging the case, just on the off chance it's repairable?

I did a search and just couldn't find this info.

Any ideas before I really butcher it will be appreciated b/c I will see the inside even if I have to dremel it open!

Note the carto will be sacrificed. And I think I used more of a "rocking" motion.

They're press-fit.

Oh - and wrap the battery in felt. I completely hosed the bake-job on the first one I disassembled.

Rocking, yeah, that's what I meant. I was replying too early in the morning for good, um, word knowing.

Update:

Frustrating. So far I've crushed 3 carts and haven't got that sucker to budge a mm! LOL I will admit I'm not using the heaviest thing in my arsenal but I'm still trying not to damage it. This still might be an issue of me being too delicate tho.

Will still continue to try. I'll prolly give it tonight to see if it will cooperate otherwise it will be dremel time. I did do some testing yesterday w/a fluke and found out that the batt itself does have a charge and still functions. hmmmmm.....

When I get it apart I"ll take pics and post them for those interested

Do you have a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel? You just need to make a small cut length wise where the connector is pressed into the battery tube. Using the carto method is a hit and miss. They are both pressed in so whichever has the thicker skin will win. It turns out the batteries are built a little stronger. The cartos are ment to tossed in the trash.

Take a lighter and apply a little bit of heat around the threaded end. It loosens the glue, then pull. Be gentle with the heat you don't want to damage the diaphragm. This has worked for me on several 801 batteries.

I didn't see any glue on the 808's, just press-fit. Are you sure the 808's are glued?

Out of curiosity, are you trying to save the "innards", or just the cylinder tube? If you don't care about the pcb, wiring, switch, and battery staying intact, just rip everything out of the LED end and use something with the proper diameter (the pick I use to remove the cap on the carto is perfect for me) to shove the battery connector out. No glue, btw, just press fit.

Sry this took a while. I was hoping that flashing the firmware on our server would help some issues I'd been having but no luck, so I sucked it up and finally got a photobucket acct.

I actually just gave up on keeping it pretty and glad I did b/c there's no waaaaaaaay I have any equipment really tiny enough to work on these! LOL

What I ended up doing was pinching the end near to the top with a pair of pliers and this popped open the top pretty easy but no good anymore.

Here's a close up of the main boards and the top of the batt. I didn't bother goin any further than this b/c anything I've got would just butcher totally. >.<
