The Motor City
My wife opens the window with the air conditioner on. I've begged, pleaded, and bribed her to not leave the window open with the AC on. I've tried countless times explaining why. She doesn't get it. I gave up. The AC is always on and about to die. Gonna be one of those things where I'll have to buy an AC unit every 5 years to support her addiction.
This is why we need a sad rating. Even optimistic doesn't apply. And I thought the endless lights and oven being left on were a problem here.

As this is a fixing thread, here are a couple ideas -

- Shut down or cover the cold air returns in the room(s) that windows are often open. At least the AC won't work as hard chilling the hotter air.

- Maybe adjust the thermostat up a bit, if programmable, during the time of day this happens.

My youngest daughter has been home from college since they shut down for covid and opens the window in her bathroom when taking a shower. The problem is that she often forgets to close it and I find it open the next morning. It's on the second story and I almost never go in her bathroom. I just notice when it feels warm upstairs and check her window.

I made it home and immediately went down to the basement to see the furnace and humidifier. Looks great and they did a nice job. I went outside to see the new ac unit and said “holy crap” as I made it around the corner. The new unit is about 2.5 times the size of the old unit.

I wish I could fix family members. Mine is paying for 2 internet services because she forgot to cancel one (still hasn't canceled). GD leaves everything on and doors unlocked. If my dd needs something we already have, instead of looking for it, she buys another. So we end up with so much stuff that nothing can be found, endless cycle. I am much too frugal for this stuff and drives me crazy. It is an adjustment living with family, I tell ya.

Perhaps reconsider living with the family??

String trimmer. Does anyone make sure they wrap the string a certain way? Like, with the curvature being toward the direction of the spin? Never got good performance and was using pre strung heads. I just installed a quick change device and it finally works well. (ProTrim)

Mine has an arrow on it that tells you which way to wind the string. I don't worry about level winding it. Last time I had to rewind, I lost a spring out of mine so the auto feed doesn't work. I have a new spring on order though.

I agree, I hate feeding lines and 'bump' heads. Stihl made a head that I cut pieces and shove them in a spring tension device. My cursing diminished considerably. No more line that refuses to feed.

I don't have a very big yard and not a lot to trim. After having engine problems constantly, I switched to cordless trimmers years ago. I have a Scotts brand one right now that auto feeds the line a little bit each time you let off the trigger. It works really well normally except when you're an idiot like me and lose the spring out of it. I finally got the new spring last night. Fedex lost it the first time it was shipped and last night I found the plastic fedex bag in the mulch in front of our porch. Evidently they weren't smart enough to put it inside the glass door. It was so light that I'm assuming that it blew off the porch.

For my daughter's birthday I bought her a cordless mower. It is an EGO from Home Depot. She hated gasoline, oil, engines that don't start. She hired it done and hated spending the money. She loves it, it is self propelled, starts every time. The battery technology EGO uses is very interesting, well worth a read on the batteries and charger. She can mow the whole thing with one half of a charge. It is quite a thing.
A friend bought an EGO chain saw 18 inch that I found quite impressive.

They look quite impressive on YouTube. Might have opted for one this year but went for a mini riding mower. Battery power has come a long way.

One thing that I liked is that all of EGO tools can take all the various batteries as can the chargers. My daughter got a sting trimmer, tool only, she uses the mower battery/charger.

Waiting for delivery of a new riding mower.Old one is chewing up blade belts and I am not spending any more money on the thing.
Yep. Get rid of it. I got rid of my rider. The deck rusted out and I figger when you can see the blades spinning from the top it's time to get rid of it. So I've been using my neighbor's rider. I do all the maintenance. New deck belt but the PTO and drive belt are finished. PITA to change them out but it has to be done.
