Welcome Zenwill! You've come to the right place, lots and lots of very knowledgeable and helpful folks here. I will tell you what worked for me when I made the switch from analogs to vaping. For me, the key was to try to keep my routine the same. What I mean by that is that I treated vaping just like smoking. I only vaped in the places and at the times I would have previously smoked. I never smoked in my house, therefore I never vaped in my house. I would go outside when I was at my office to vape, and I would limit myself to about the same amount of time it would have taken me to finish an analog. I think keeping my routine and lifestyle the same made the switch much easier for me. By doing it this way, I didn't have to feel like my whole world had changed, I just substituted vaping for tobacco. I smoked a pack a day for about 35 years, and the switch was much easier than I expected.

The one caution I will give is that vaping isn't magic, it's not as simple as just picking it up and you're all of a sudden a non-smoker. You have to want to quit. Vaping is a great tool, and makes quitting so much easier, but ultimately you have to want to quit, and commit to making the switch. With the support and advice you'll get here (most of it much better than my advice), you can do it. Before you know it, you'll be an ex-smoker, and you'll feel so much better.

Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum zenwill. Glad to have you here!:)

Great advise you are getting. I noticed you originally posted in a SG thread before the Moderators gave you your own thread.

Check out this forum: SG Vapers. Make sure you read all the "stickies" as there are special rules you will need to follow due to the sensitivity of vaping in SG. You will not be able to post there until you have your first 5 posts and the server updates at :25 past the hour.

If you need help in getting in your 5 posts, continue posting in this thread or just go out and welcome some of the other new members posting in the "New Member" Forum.

If you're having trouble making the switch, you may need a higher level of nicotine. Also bear in mind, vaping is slower than smokingon the delivery of the nic, so you may need longer vaping sessions.

I think getting upset with yourself over making the transition just adds to the anxiety. Try to celebrate the ones you didn't smoke rather than beat yourself up over the ones you did smoke.

For me, this was a 2 month transition. Finally on May 5 last year, I told myself to see if I could go 24 hours without a cigarette. And I did! So I decided since I made it to not look back, and never smoke again.

A few bits of advice that were given to me when I first started vaping.

1. Do not give up and do not get disappointed if it does not happen overnight.
2. The cigs right after meals and the first one in the morning are the hardest to give up. What I did was take a few drags and then vape through the rest of the urge - after a time only the first one in the morning was left and I practiced vaping through it until I could.
3. You may need two levels of nic juice - one for regular daily vaping and a stronger one for when the urges are stronger.
4. To repeat - do not give up - the folks here will help in any way they can...

Hey zenwill
I was lucky that I gave up smoking with my first puff of eJuice. Lots of nicotine is important but I would also recommend going into a Vape shop and test driving all the flavors. in my opinion, juice flavor is paramount.
Also.. To help keep you into vaping after you find a right flavor
  • If you have a bit of a nerdy streak, there are so many types of hardware thingamajigs and deelyobbers to play with that you may find the hardware part more enjoyable than the actual vaping.
  • Or if you just want your vape with no fuss, there are many low-maintenance options.

Good luck to you. Stay strong and vape on

A week ago I couldn't imagine quiting, I've been smoking a pack of exporta dark blues a day for nearly 11 years. Then my brother got a vape and I tried it a couple times and loved the idea of being able to swap flavours whenever I felt like it. So I broke down and went and picked up an Aspire Nautilus kit and grabbed 2 juices both at 24mg of nicotine as that's what the gentleman at the store recommended for me since of my previous smoking habits. I used the vape for 2 days and found the strength was getting too much and went out and grabbed an 18mg peach and a 12mg root beer. Found the 18 was still too strong for an all day vape for me (I should mention I'm allowed to smoke at work so the nautilus was almost always being used) dropped to strictly 12mg after that and over the last few days I've dropped down to 3mg with the occasional 6mg for the days I'm really craving a smoke. My advice would be to just commit, it's not an easy task for everyone and everyone's going to have a different opinion on the matter. I don't consider myself to have actually quit yet as it's only been a little over a week and I still do get the occasional craving. Its all about actually wanting to get off the cigarettes in my opinion and the longer you go without one the less you'll crave them. I had really good luck with one of those cheap disposalible ecigs from the gas stations (the ones with no nicotine) I find I smoke a ton while driving so I just left it in the car even after it died and whenever I had a craving I'd just pick it up and act like I was smoking. I cut down lots just doing that, it's a combination of habits your body becomes addicted to so just having something to play with in your hands might help you out like it did for me.

Good luck I'm rooting for you.

Please do not take my shortness or sarcasm or rudeness or arrogance personally. Following is my opinion, but it did work VERY WELL for me. Once I bought my first real quality mod, I have NEVER had a single craving for another cigarette. Period. Vaping made what had previously been impossible for me to do, easy as pie.

Look it's really simple to quit smoking if you are going to replace the nic intake from cigs with nic intake from vaping.

#1. Do some research before buying anything. There are hundreds of thousands of video's on YouTube. I started with e-cigalikes and couldn't get a hit off them that satisfied. My first mod/genny was a Zenesis Standard...close to $300, expensive? Not when you consider I still have it, it still works great, and I still use it almost daily.

#2. Get good quality equipment, do not skimp on start up costs. If you get cheap crap that doesn't work or doesn't satisfy you will go back to smoking. Plenty of vape shops open all over now, get help there or here. Decide early on a direction ie. mouth to lung vaping is closest to cig smoking get a mod and juice that will provide a throat hit. Cloud chasing on low nic juices IMHO is NOT the way to quit smoking. You're addicted to nic not clouds. Provari is a great variable voltage mod. Great quality, great warranty and service. Lasts forever and the price you pay for it is nothing because it works and it's VERY WELL MADE. There are thousands of different kinds and styles of atomizers that will fit it. Drippers, tanks, carto's whatever, pretty much everything made nowdays will fit a Provari.

#3. Quality juice from reputable USA sourced and made goods. DO NOT BUY CHINESE made juice. Do NOT buy cheap "house blends" from local vapor shops, they are cheap for a reason. God only knows what's in that crap. If you smoke a pack a day of full flavor cigs or more I suggest you start with at least 18 mg nic, even 24 mg, you can always vape less or cut back later, get what is going to give you enough nic to satisfy your craving. Lazarus Vintage, 5 Pawns, Ripe Vapes, Alice in Vapeland, Alien Visions and Charlie Noble are all good quality juices I have tried personally and will purchase from again. Start here, there are hundreds of flavors to choose from. I was a pack a day of Marlboro reds then Lights for about 30 years and I started with 18mg and am only now creeping down in nic. Don't get caught up in all the hype. Good quality juices made in the USA are all good. You're going to hear ALL kinds of adjectives used and buzzwords to describe the superior taste of a particular juice from their fanboys/gals, it's all good if it tastes good to you. Start with a tobacco if you're a smoker trying to quit. I started with one tobacco juice, found another I liked better and vaped it exclusively day in and day out for over two years. Only lately have I branched out into other flavors..... Also keep in mind that nothing, no juice, no mod or atty or carto or dripper or tank is going to taste exactly like a cigarette. It's vapor NOT smoke, it's going to be different. Breathe, you can do this.

#4. A lot of the addiction to cigs is in the other crap in cigs, give it a few days maybe weeks, you're only getting nic now, That other crap is poison. DRINK A LOT OF WATER. DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Let me say that one more time. DRINK A LOT OF WATER.

Good luck.

to ecf. Nice to meet you and so very glad that you are here. All very good suggestions you have gotten so far. I did both for a good while and slowly reduced my cigarettes. It got to a point where I noticed my cigarettes tasting nasty. By the time I got down to one a day (I was trying to use up a pack), it was not enjoyable any longer and I gladly started vaping full time. For some reason, I think this gave me time to adjust and accept the fact that I was really going to do it this time.

Let's face it. It is hard to say goodbye to an old friend. (cigarettes) I was a heavy smoker so I started out with a higher nicotine and that curbed any real cravings. But if you have adequate gear and find juices that appeal to your taste buds. . . you will have fun with your "new" friend. You can find the same joy with this healthier alternative.

And the best reason I can think of that you will be able to do it this time is the simple fact that you have all of us in your corner. This is a family. So make yourself at home and let us know how we can help.

Good luck to you. I look forward to reading more about you and your successful vaping.

DON'T QUIT.... Nobody likes a quitter..

I stopped smoking by Vaping.. I Got a Vape pen EGO1100 and a Kanger Protank, and juice that would give approx the same amount of nic as the Marlboros, in June 2014. I carried the pen everywhere, and hit it first every time I wanted a smoke.. The cigs I left in my car or at home by the ashtray on the patio. (smoked outside at home) Almost immediatly I reduced the number of sticks per day.. New Years day 2015 it occured to me I had not BOUGHT any cigs in over a month and didn't think I had smoked 1 in all of December.. So I tried one of the wifes.... It tasted like an ashtray.. I have had 5 test puffs since. Still bad.

One thing to note. IO started out trying to find a cigarette like flavor.. GIVE THAT UP NOW...... You cannot duplicate smoke with water vapor. I also found I hate almost all of what I call KIDDY Vapes, all those candy, fruit and dessert vapes make me ill. The saviour for me was NET juice.. (Natural Extracted Tobacco) I also found I prefer Pipe tobacco based juice better that cigarette type of blends.. FWIW, the Cigarette juices from www.Naturally-Extracted-Tobacco.com, e-liquids for electronic cigarettes Organic Spirit and Dark, are what I used at first and are my favorite Cigarette Juices. I have since gone on to Pipe and Cigar tobacco based juices.

what worked for me the best was actually getting a decent variable voltage/variable wattage device.

I used to smoke quite a lot and when i first bought an EGO kit and i found myself buying another pack of cigs within a few days. It just wasn't satisfactory to vape the little Thing. And i kept on smoking for another 3-4 months and then i decided to invest in a decent mod and when i first hit the thing with a 6mg liquid i loved it!
since then i get disgusted after tasting a cigarette and i used the lowest nicotine liquid i could get at my local vape shop.

Since then vaping has became a hobby for me but definitely invest in a good mod thats the best advice i have hope it helps :)

After a while you might prefer the vape.

That was the turning point for me. One day, out of the blue, really, when I hadn't had any nicotine for 3 or 4 hours, the craving that came on was for my vape...not a cigarette. It was at that moment that I knew my battle was won.
