there was no cell service after ike for nearly 2 weeks.......on all carriers, so i don't know how good a solar cell charger is gonna work for ya.

Hi - Thankfully "Irene" went by Us here in Florida . . .

And after going though a few of these, let me just say "Be Prepared" and not just for 3 days of supplies - YOU MUST get enough "stuff" to last you for at least 7 days/1 week and even better for 2 weeks - for each person and do not forget your pets (all kinds) . . .

Another thing to remember is to have a First Aid kit on hand and some kind of "Body" wash for those days without water for cleaning yourself - just saying from experience . . .

Oh & BTW, not that it would get to you in time for this one - but there is this that was just posted in "Deals and Steals" by "meens" . . . Free Solar Charger

Oh yea - PLEASE STAY SAFE EVERYONE

I'll never forget during Ike's aftermath a young man in his 20's carried a seizing child, about 2 years old into the ER. I remember being shocked (I've been doing this for a long time, so it takes A LOT to shock me) & just stared at him.........The guy says, "Where should I put her?, & I've got her dead sister in the car, should I bring her in too?".

I snatched that baby out of his hands quicker than i'd ever done anything. The child's temp was 107 degrees. The ER doc told the man NOT to bring the dead child inside, because now it's a crime scene.

Apparently, they had been out in the heat, without food or water for days.

Hurricanes are evil. God Bless & get the heck out of their path if you can. If your job mandates you to stay, then bring your family with you & have a plan.

I really hope the postman isn't being a ******* today...it would be nice to have some goodies to check out durring the outage!

Just as a suggestion for those that can not afford a generator...get a cheap powered USB hub and a computer UPS (under 100$) to keep your vapage batteries charged durring an outage.

Yep - your correct - AND I actually didn't have either phone service - nor any electricity either - for almost 3 weeks after "Wilma" hit here . . . Matter of fact, a number of my friends and people I know didn't have either one or the other for weeks either because there was no source of electircity for us . . .

AND, given that experience, without a doubt I am prepared - NOW . . . a lot of different batteries, adaptors, car chargers, even a Mobile Inverter - so I can charge whatever I need to . . .

However, it would be better to be prepared with some source of electrcity (especially "SOLAR" ) and being able to connect to the "outside world" then not having any source at all . . . More importantly, it is another and better way to be able to charge "stuff" other than just a cell phone - you have portable TV, Radios, and Hey - I was able to even charged my laptop for a few hours of service from a "solar" charger once so I could get emails and reply to emails when I was able to finally get a "Hotspot" after the 2nd week . . .

SO - maybe it will and maybe it won't help everyone - but at least you got another "source" . . .

there was no cell service after ike for nearly 2 weeks.......on all carriers, so i don't know how good a solar cell charger is gonna work for ya.

Guess, for the next time a hurricain passes by I will really need a "Mod" . . . Just not ready, nor have the cash for one right now . . .

From what I understand, Connecticut is going to get the worst of it, which is where I live... Don't ask me to repeat the terminology from the weather man, something to do with lines converging and a colorful graph that distracted me with neon colors... I'm more worried about not having TV or internet, than anything. I live in a basement apartment, on a hill, an hour from the beach. Hate to sound whiny, but being disabled, in-home digital entertainment is most of what I have to do, so this is going to suck, lol.

Looking at weather website is starting to make me nervous, especially waiting for it to come. Off to find something to do with my grill.

HEY - You know mass media and all their hype, especially Weather reports . . .

And just talking from personal experience here and having gone a few Hurricanes. . . All you have to do - as the old "Boy Scout" motto goes is - "BE PREPARED" . . . AND, that means just that "Be Prepared" for what "may happen" - not what "THEY" say is going to happen . . . Nobody - but absolutely No-body, really knows what is going to happen - till it actually does happen - it is as simple as that . . .

More importantly, Shelter, Food, and Water are the main things you NEED to have . . . AND get everything that you can afford to protect and make life easier for you and your family/Friends during and after the Hurricane . . .

And on that note: STAY together, keep each other company, and calm . . . if you don't have anyone - then find a neighbor and/or anyone - even someone you "despise" to be with - anybody that is clam and collected - makes it so much easier & better to go through . . .

BTW, since I have been though both - One of the things you need to know and remember is the aftermath of a hurricane is really no different than any major "Blizzard" or big "Snow Storm" that hits the Mid-Atlantic States and the Northeast so regularly in the Winter . . . You are just not use to having a Hurricane hit that far up the coast (but it has happened) . . . and the only possible scary thing is the sound of the "WIND" (Personally - I hate it) . . . However, it is like a a real Big Nor'easter hitting you . . . And you have been though that . . . Also, another "scary" and real stupid thing can be - the dam things going by you that were not taken inside or "strapped down" . . . So if you absolutely cannot take it inside - strapped the "F" thing down well enough so it can't move at all . . . That is a must to do - if it is movable - take it inside . . .

Just my :2c: and MY opinion and from My Prospective . . . That's ALL . . .

I just hope this information helps anyone that reads it . . .

B, yes it was ugly.
There are many more stories I could tell but they are too sad to even begin.

I'll never forget working at Vanderbilt (level 1 trauma center serving 4 states) in Tennessee when some tornados came through........it was so bad that people were driving into the ambulance bay & dropping people off in the backs of their pick up trucks............YEAH, it was that bad....& all of the ambulances were already out on calls.

When I told my husband to build that thing that he built, I knew why I wanted it. I knew why I would someday probably need it. People at work say we aren't gonna get another hurricane of Ike's magnitude for another 25 years, but i'd rather be prepared.

yep, hug them babies! hug them every single day! My 11 year old son says I hug him too much & that he's "not a baby anymore".......sometimes I just can't help it when I see the pain that some parents face, i'm just so happy to see my son when I get home.

Jen,

Everyone be safe AND smart!

I'm gonna go hug and kiss my baby now.

Once you have all the human supplies, please go out and make sure you have enough for your pets. Food and extra water for them too. If you can, set out barrels or trash cans cleaned and bleached with a heavy liner for rain water. You may want to strap it to something. Animals can drink it and you can wash, cook, flush toilets with it. Save bottled water for yourself. Go online now and look for how to sanitize rainwater, if it should come to that. I would also suggest a lot of canned and freeze dried foods that are usable without heating.

Just got back from hurricane shopping. Everyone was out of normal water, so we got a bunch of Vitamin Water, natural ginger ale and seltzer. Also got a lot of dry snack-type foods, A HIBACHI GRILL, charcoal, lighters, lighter fluid, charcoal fluid, candles and canned food. They were also sold out of flashlights...

OH- perhaps most importantly, a three-prong DC converter for the car, so we can run power to our computers, ecig chargers, phones, a toaster, or whatever else! Had to check 3 places before we could find one and they only HAD one.

So, convertible electricity, FIRE and rations. beyond the fact that we live in a basement apartment, on a hill, an hour from the beach, BRING IT! >:O Let the food thaw, i'll be barbecuing! :D

All is fine over here, just cloudy so far!

That's GOOD . . .

However, that is only "Irene" reaching out you to let you know she is a commin' - She probably won't get to you till sometime on Sunday . . . SO be real safe . .
.
Just as a suggestion - And I do not mean to tell you what to do at all - nor have you asked . . . But I noticed you said in your previous post you got "candles" to use . . . Please be careful with them, I have personally seen what happens when people use candles during the Hurricane . . . REAL BAD IDEA ! ! ! SO - Please, if the electricity goes out (which it probabaly will), "DO NOT USE" the candles during the storm - but only after the storm . . .
