So i got some 30 Gauge Kanthal from a vendor on eBay and they threw in some "28/29" gauge also, Ive been using the 30 its fine. Getting microcoils done been using it for a long time but i'm coming to the end of the reel so i thought oh right i'll give this "28/29" gauge a go. I wrapped it and i was aware it was going to be lower so i did 9 wraps and unwrapped the end i was holding it on the bit with, so it was 8, screwed it on my nemesis, firing it and pushing the wraps together to get that nice even middle to out glow, seemed all good. I put it on my Vamo (the only Ohm meter i have) BAM 0.1 ohm... Okkkkayyy, i took it off and i tried like 15 wraps just to see and that only went upto 0.2 ohms... Did it once more with 10 wraps and again 0.1 Ohms. I didn't do anymore because of my mech and battery safety and so forth, Is it my wrapping with 28 Gauge, my vamo or some weird wire ? My vamo reads my other coils correctly but not this 28/29 gauge stuff when i make a coil with it. Like i said it got thrown in with what i ordered, i didn't specifically want this wire but it states the gauge on the reel so. Any suggestions ?

Thank you all

Can you take a picture of it, and any markings on the spool? My first guess would be a short or a bad connection, but I'm assuming you checked that. Word of advice would be to check it on the ohms meter BEFORE firing it on the mech. Even if you sort out the wire issue, things happen. Just yesterday I built a coil that measures at 1.4, then I assembled and it was coming back as a short. Coil was toucing the chimney. Never hurts to double check these things before you hit the fire button.

Are you sure it is Kanthal? Could it be possible that they gave you a little bit of Non-Resistant wire? Try testing a straight strand with a multimeter. If it produces similar results that could very well be nickle or silver.
I though about this too. I've never used non resistance wire, so I wasn't sure if it would actually read anything or not??

eta The op said he fired it. I'm assuming no reistance wire would not heat up?

I've taken the build off my mod and put twisted 30 gauge on it which is fine reading 1.2 ohms. It's got to be the wire I presume, I did order before Xmas and I can't remember if it was a Vape site or not. If not this could be some other wire, I understand thicker wire is quite less springy but this doesn't really spring abd when it's bent they're isn't really any effort of it trying to wind itself back

Hmm... it probably would not heat up but by wrapping it and having a coil it may gain ever-so-slight resistance since the energy has to travel in the coil now... that is definitely a good question and I can't think of a safe way to actually test that.

It fired but once it snapped after I pressed it, like straight away

This really sounds like non-resistant wire.

If it's that thick and those are accurate readings, my semi-educated guess is that it's non-resistance wire, and would be no good at all for building coils.

I bought my wire from these guys: Variable Speed Drives, Phase Converters items in TEMCo Industrial Power Systems store on eBay!

Great stuff and fast shipping and reasonable pricing. They do charge $25.00 US for shipping to the UK. But, they charge the same $25.00 for the Kanthal A1 Wire 30 Gauge 1 lb 4142ft Resistance Resistor AWG A 1 | eBay

Which would last you, oh probably a lifetime! ;)
