I have MagicJack. I canceled my long relationship with Ma Bell a few months ago. My MagicJack phone number is not published, and I can count the people I've given it to on one hand, with a couple fingers left over.
I seem to recall also being required to give a phone number on one or more of the vendors from whom I've purchased vaping supplies. That's IT, that's all the exposure my new number has had.
Over a period of four days, I noticed the same unknown call on my phone while I was at work. No message left. I called the number. The recording thanked me for calling "the information center" ... don't you love informative descriptions like that? It said they had "returned my call" and something about me wanting more information from a web site I'd visited. I have made no such calls nor made requests for more information on any web sites.
I waited about six minutes for a live person to come to the phone. I asked what web site had referred me to him. He babbled something about "some smoking cessation product" blah blah blah.
Seeing as how the only purchases I've made online in the past six weeks or so was for vaping supplies ... I am reasonably certain one of the vendors I've done business with has sold my number.
I see no other explanation, considering how otherwise I've guarded my number.
