And truly, I never say I hate anything or anybody but...

Has anybody else here had trouble with them? I can't make my PS purchase today because their "security model" has "randomly chosen" to block my credit card purchases. This, after my bank tells me there is no problem with my card.

Nobody on the phone can remove the security block and they don't know how long it will last, they "really can't say".

Okay, so I'll pay with checking account funds, no problem.

Ooops, sorry again, but paypal deposits to checking accounts take 2-4 days, and you need to confirm the amounts before we'll let you pay. "You'll just have to wait".

The quotes are from the very ~helpful~ (sneer) supervisor.

I now truly despise Paypal. Basically, they don't let you pay.

Odd, since that's what I was under the impression they were there for!!

Please *whomever*, let Steve be able to process a credit card...

I have been using Paypal for several years and have had zero problems. I have more problems with using my credit card on line. I had to cancel the card three times, because someone got my card numbers. This is not from Paypal,I don't use a credit card there either. Credit cards for me have been a nightmare online. Love Paypal. I am at the place if a company doesn't take Paypal. I don't order.

I used to love PayPal until I learned the hard way how few rights you really have with them. They held over $9k of my money for over a year.

What they will do is "limit" your account such that you can (maybe) make purchases but cannot withdraw your cash. They ask for your drivers license, copies of your credit card, bank statements. Then after sending it they just ask you for different documents, things you just don't have. This can go round and 'round until the customer just gives up. This is legal because you agreed to it. I won't even get into chargebacks either.

Also if you have ever had an account terminated for having a negative balance, good luck if your spouse/roommate/whatever has an account. Or opens one.

PayPal will not take one of my credit cards simply because it's an offshore bank and I have a USA address. Nobody else in the world has a problem with it.

I cannot stand PayPal, and until recently I thought I couldn't use them at all (see below for workaround). Why do all the suppliers here use PayPal and nothing else? Made it REALLY hard to make a purchase. TW's UK site does accept Nochex though, which was fortunate.

I stumbled upon a trick though. If you go through the PayPal checkout _without_ creating an account you can get by, even if your name and address is the same. Don't use a credit card you have used in any other PayPal account. If you need to, buy a disposable prepaid card and use that. I was always scared to try that because I figured they weren't _that_ dumb and would reject it if all the info was the same. But it worked fine.

Didn't the smokeless shop just have a run-in with them early this week? Since I don't see the notice on their site anymore I'd say they were fortunate to get it resolved so quickly.

To the OP - Did you actually see a message about the "security block" or were you told that as an explanation by someone from PP? If you were told that, but didn't see a message on screen to that affect, they might be wrong (i.e. lying.) If what you got was a generic bank refusal of card message, then it's possible PP is trying to process your credit card through an ATM network (which won't work.)

Last year sometime I had to redo some of my online CC things because they all started doing this. PP is the only one I can't make permanent - I have to do it every time (that is, tell it to process me credit card as, you know, a credit card.)

On sites that redirect to PP for payment, you can always just use your CC without going through PP.

If you open a "PP" account at your bank, you can always instantly transfer the needed funds into it and be on your way. In other words, keep a minimum balance in it and just use it to service PP when necessary.

I hope everyone here has enough experience to know this, but if you don't, listen up - NEVER keep ANY funds in your PP account.

If the OP or anyone else has had their known good credit card refused, look for the text link in the paragraph at the top of the page when you're paying. Sorry, can't remember what it says or exactly what page, it sounds like a help link, I think "process" is one of the two words. Left click that and you'll get a popup - scroll allllll the way to the end and you'll see where to change the processing network.

Thanks programmer, that's a great idea, but I'm calmer now and will play by their rules.

It appears that all accounts need banking info to guard against identity theft, even if you're paying by credit card (at least that's what I was told). They make deposits into your checking account and you must verify these deposit amounts, thereby proving it's you.

This deposit business takes a few days so I guess I'll have to wait. Thankfully Steve told me he'd hold my order until they "allow" me to pay. It would be ever so nice if Paypal would share with you that they will want your banking info when you sign up on the site.

I'll tell you what. Their customer service absolutely SUCKS. Rude, unhelpful, snippy people with no answers. I wish sellers would offer a choice of how to pay, there must be other paypal-like entities out there who actually treat their customers with respect and appreciation!

Thanks Steve for holding my stuff~ whew!

fjames,
The message I get is "you cannot use this credit card for this transaction. Please use another funding source". There's no text link, and anyway, I used the credit card yesterday online and it went through just fine.

The problem is I'm "unverified". To get verified you give them your banking info and/or sign up for a *more convenient* paypal credit card. How ridiculous. If I was an identity thief wouldn't it be likely I'd have somebody's SS# and banking info?

I know it's all to protect us as consumers, but things seem a bit out of hand when I have to enter my checking account info in order to use a credit card. Seriously, there's got to be better ways to verify it's me.

Why's that?
Because they can keep it. See my longish post. Keeping very small amounts in there I guess I don't see a problem with as long as you're prepared to lose it. But an unfunded account does not get locked. That's something to think about.

My primary funding source is my checking account. My secondary is my credit card and I've never had a problem with them. Been using paypal for years.

Lu

Better hope your credit card is not an ATM card tied to your account. If it is, and you ever switch banks, you WILL need to be on the phone with paypal to get your new bank setup as primary. Period. They don't know why either.

Well, my intake balance never gets very high because I spend it too quickly. All those things I recently sold? I have about 1/3 of that left now. That won't last the month in there. I probably won't have any need to withdraw it as I'll spend it too fast...lol

This Is Just a Tip, Take it as You Please.

You Should Only Keep Small Amounts In Your PayPal Account and Use a Separate Bank Account with Small Amounts in It For Verification Purposes (they check occasionally, besides initially) Just for PayPal Use.

Never, Never Use One Of Your Main Banking Accounts With PayPal!

FYI: PayPal Has Had a Several Class Actions Suits that they lost in the past for "Freezing Accounts" (your bank account) for Crap Reasons, ie, Chargebacks, Buyer or Seller Complaints and Froze The Bank Accounts. (You have to through Hell To get it Released!)

Paypal still pulls this crap, u can search Google for the horror stories with Paypal...

Just Cuz things have been fine for years means crap!

Just Beware.

Paypal sucks big hairy donkey balls. They shut down my account 7 years ago for being "associated with an adult website" (which is against their terms of agreement). 2 years ago I started a new company (non-adult) and when I went to open a paypal account I was told I couldn't because the company owner had a paypal account shut down in the past!!! They suck and they never mailed me a check for the $ in the account... even after I wrote a number of emails and letters. They just kept it because if the "terms of agreement are violated".. they can just do that. Keep your $!!!! I hate them and had to set up a paypal acct in someone elses name.

Hey guys, I found a great anti-paypal site. It's call screwpaypal.com. They educate and point out what is and isn't legal procedure, take you through the process of how to assemble and file a legally viable complaint, then provide links to agencies in your state where you can file them.

Wow, it's mind boggling how they're still in business considering all the documented misdeeds and lawsuits.
