TT....I don't think the wife would appreciate that...unless you go out and purchase her a wonderful 50+ inch plasma tv to replace it...

I've got me an idea. You're right. That receipt deserves to be framed. I'm gonna take the front end off the television set, it's a 12 inch screen black and white and that front end has a frame and glass in it. I'll tape the receipt in there and hang it on the wall. That will look real nice and will really make our shack look like a first class place.

And I can also tell my friends that its one of those wall-mounted color television sets like they have up there at the Coffee Shop. They'll think I'm rich or something.

Well, some of those old guys at the Coffee Shop have one of those fine television sets like that, but they get that there Sociable Security. I wrote 'em a letter and told them I wanted mine too, but they never would send me one of those checks. They said I never paid anything into it. And I didn't ever know I owed them anything.

I guess those two jobs I had at Whattaburger and the Sewage Treatment Plant didn't last long enough for me to get Sociable Security.

I tried to get that Unemployable Insurance and they asked me where I had been working and I told them I hadn't been working. So they said I had to have a job to get Unemployable Insurance. So I said, hell, if I had me a job I wouldn't need their money. I don't understand those people.

Well TT...I guess it could be worse....The unemployable insurance people told my dad they wanted 15000 dollars back from him. It really irked me...here is a man that has been working for 40+ years paying into unemployment and he gets laid off. He decided to go back to school so he could get a job and the state decided that he shouldn't get unemployment because he was in school trying to better himself so he could get a job...RIDICULOUS....

That is what my dad was doing...the state paid for him to go to school and the same state now wants him to pay back his unemployment for the time he went to school. All my poor dad wants to do is WORK....like he has for the last 40 years...he doesn't want a free ride. Hell...the classes he took were IT related and I must say that he impressed me....you can teach an old dog new tricks....so you can still learn too TT :) I feel so bad for my dear old dad...he's always worked his ... off...he's 58 and got laid off...if college kids and others can't find a job who is going to hire a 58 year old?

I don't just like volleyballs....I LUB THEM....

That's crazy Maureen!!! I thought they had programs to ASSIST people who had been laid off get an education so they could be employable again! Sounds to me like he needs to be in touch with his Congressman.

In my case, I have an aversion to work. But I do like volleyballs.

I retired when I was 65, they called me back when I was 66 and did another year and a half and I retired again then they called me back when I was 68 and I did another year or so. I had to try retiring three times before it took hold.

There ARE companies that will take older people. The job market determines what is or isn't available, but I wouldn't let my age be a deterrent if I wanted to work. I'd focus more on selling my skills and abilities and I have more of them than any young person.

I think this is my last post for tonight (not sure though, because I haven't read page two of this thread!). Anyway, I don't know if your wife will appreciate you doing this. You might end up learning much more about astronomy. :)

You sound so much like my dad. He was an intelligence office in the military and retired when he was 65. He was back to work within a year; of course I have no idea what he was doing since he was in intelligence. He left again, and was back to work within a year after that.

I entirely agree with your thoughts about companies hiring older people. That's a major topic in one of the courses I teach - Organizational Behavior. So often, older people have the skills , knowledge, and abilities that younger people don't have, even with a graduate degree.

You are so right.. I just completed a retirement course (fed govt) and that's what they said. Lots are leaving and coming back as contractors. Senoirs are becoming in favor again just for that reason. We are no longer considered 'useless' when we retire. Which, of course, we never were but we viewed as such by employers. Now they have to eat crow. I am so glad this country is finally realizing that their older citizens are very valuable. For a while there, this was the only country that did not value the older person. Weird, but true. Well in my heart I will always be 25ish. (A gal can dream, can't she?)

I got to thinking after I wrote the above ... that Maureen is gonna come slap me with her volleyball. But I truly think that a persons attitude is 90% of getting work and if you show confidence in yourself and your abilities, you'll get the job.

I greatly admire Maureen's dad for going back and getting more education, but the one thing I would caution him on is don't just focus on getting a job in whatever field he was studying. For many employers the fact that a man showed enough initiative to further his education, shows them he is willing to learn and can be trained. What he studied really doesn't matter as much as the fact that he did it.

BUT, there's one thing that has to be taken into consideration. You may have to go to where the job is. And for some, that may not always be the easiest thing to do. Some areas are so severely depressed economically that there is no other option and other areas are booming.

And I still think that what the State of Pa. did to her dad is awful. He didn't just accept unemployment and go lay around the house. He took that money and worked with it to better himself. He should be applauded not penalized.

TT...my dad is a electrical genius (even though at 18 he only did what was considered "trade school" at the time). He went back to learn IT and took classes that would scare even me...and I've been working on pc's for over 17 years....he wasn't in IT before although he did work in a tech support type roll.

He absolutely should be applauded and not penalized....unfortunately he's been out of work going on two years now (it'll be two years in June) and it is really getting him down. He deals with depression and diabetes and everything that goes with those issues too....I must say that there is no one I'm more proud of than my dear old dad :)

Well Maureen, I'm sure your dad is equally proud to have a fine lady like you for his daughter.

And encourage him to stay after it. I learned something when I was just a kid. Its the guy that keeps coming back day after day that gets the job, not the guy who sends in one application and you never hear from him again.

I feel bad for your dad; two years is a long time to be out of work. I hope he's able to find something soon.

Thanks VG...I hope so too...it's hard when you worked for the last 40 years and can't find a job. I feel so bad for him and wish there was something I could do to help him...
