the best thing to do is watch this video on the zap
the guy in the video is ZEN himself and he walks you through the proper set up and operation of the zap (or any genesis for that matter)'and is a great first step.

a hotspot is when the coils dont glow evenly and produces a very burnt or harsh vapor, follow his method and make the coils even out then try again

I should have mentioned I must have watched Zen's video 5 times. All of the coils were glowing though one was a little less bright than the other two. I proded with the blunt needle and it evened out. In his video he is using stainless steel wick in my Zap it came with ceramic I assume the streps are the same.
If I want to make a new ccoil could I use the same wick or should I use the spare wick that the zap came this?
Thanks for any help you can give

i guess you bought it used? or did they change the wicks?

im not too experienced with the ceramic but try to tilt and keep the wick really wet when you vape. you can try to change the coil. but im at a loss on the ceramic, im a mesh guy. lol others have said it takes a bit for the ceramic to break in and start wicking properly.

the ceramic wicks are used indefinitely, and mesh is used till it doesnt work anymore.

Well I noticed that the middle coil though glowing was not glowing as brightly as the one above and below. I fiddled with them a bit and then held it upside down for a few minutes to let the juice wick up through the ceramic wick. The coils registered 1.7 ohm and i was finally able to get it to vape with out being like a blow torch at 3.9v. I am not overly impressed just yet but i am encouraged that I at least got it to vape. Now it is on to find the sweet spot and hope with a little time the ceramic wick will break in.
