I recommend REAL WOOL for filling cartridges

I've seen all kinds of different fill materials discussed in numerous threads - and added my two cents to a few of them - but wanted to start a new thread that was just about real wool fill material. I ordered some real "wool nibs" online, and they're the BEST! I'm done experimenting with anything else.

I've tried out all of the various cart filler recommendations for myself now, including a couple different types of polyester fiber, and didn't like the taste of the poly, or tea bags, or paper towels, or anything else that I tried to substitute. Nothing seemed to me to have the clean, non-taste of the original cart materials. So I finally did an online search for "natural wool fill", and waded through a bunch of sheep farm sites and yarn companies, until I found one that sold wool filled pillows, mattresses and comforters. They had a line item in their store where you could buy extra, cleaned/sanitized wool nibs by the ounze (for the purpose of making yourself a firmer pillow) at $1.00 per ounze.

Eight ounzes of wool turns out to be about the size of 1-1/2 travel-sized pillows, or 2 airline-size pillows ... plenty to keep me in cart filler until the end of my days. The nibs are about pea sized and larger chunks 'o curly wool. Yep, right off the sheep. One single "nib" can easily be pulled apart into a spider web, and then rolled or folded to fit into a cart (nestled up to my little cotton swab straw). It does need to be pulled apart, since it's denser than poly fill, and then the little stray stringy-things that escape from the cart need to be snipped off.

I HIGHLY recommend this stuff. I'm getting no more mouthfuls of juice when I use my mini pv. I like to start with a fresh cart every morning, and I figure that I can do that every day now ... on the cheap! It cost under $10.00, including shipping. I'm a happy camper, and just wanted to share my happily ever after story.

I'd considered using real wool after recalling that "hot mittens" for iron workers and glass blowers use wool for insulation, so it's pretty heat-resistant stuff.

Here's another form, it is a very thick (3/16" thick!)felt. I have used this pretty much exclusively for a long time, did suggest it one or two times, no one seemed to be interested, but you are right! Melinda09, the very best filler of all. Just cut to fit cart + tiny bit longer. This is exactly the right consistency, holds juice and releases juice just like fiberfill, stays useful much longer. Recommend soaking overnight in plain water, then rinsing WELL before using. No additives, soaps, sizers, this is green as well. Write to seller for smaller pieces, it lasts forever. i'm assuming you can make it the density you want? my big problem with poly batting from the wal mart was that it was TOOOO dense , i felt like it sucked up the juice.. and gave nothing back

I purchased one of the swatches from nearsea naturals a few weeks ago to use as cart filler. It works fairly well, although maybe a little more "absorbent" than poly (meaning it doesn't wick to the bridge quite as well)

At least with real wool, if any gets to the heating coil it just tastes like burnt hair, instead of getting a lung full of toxic chemical fumes.

I also tried some of the hemp fibers they sell, but they are a bit difficult to work with.

I don't know if I would use wool. I would think that the e-juice would absorb some lanolin, and I'm not sure if I want to vape that stuff. Lanolin is really sticky, so it would probably not be good for an atomiser either.

ETA: The more I think about this, the less of a good idea I think it is. I'm a hand spinner (I make yarn) so I handle a lot of wool. Commercially prepared wool, like the batting you are looking at, is not perfectly clean by any means. It contains a lot of dust and other small partials (dirt, ground up poo, etc.). When I spin in black pants, I end up covered with dust and crap. It also still contains chemicals from the cleaning process. Hand prepared wool (usually this is the organic stuff) usually contains more lanolin and sometimes a decent amount of the soap used to clean it. It also usually contains more "vegetable matter" which is leaves, sticks, dirt, poo, etc. I'm not sure how good this would be for the atomiser or the user.

Sorry. I should have posted the link ... just wasn't sure how wild these people were going to be about a hundred orders for a few ounces of wool nibs at $3.00-a-pop, and figured that people would find it for themselves.

The above link that yvilla found for Holy Lamb Organics is the same company that I purchased mine from - but a better link to buy from, I think, since it lists a 3-ounce quantity for $3.00. 3-ounces is plenty! The 8 ounces that I bought was overkill. If you want to look at this link where I bought mine, it tells a little more about how they clean/sanitize the wool and what-not. Here's a snippet of what they say about how they clean their wool:

"Clean Wool: Not all wool is the same. It depends on the machinery. Our wool mill uses additional breakers and carders to produce an incredibly clean wool that is dust free and virtually vegetable matter free. We have seen a lot of wool over the years and you would be surprised at what can pass for good wool."

I was concerned about how clean it was too (didn't want to vape sheep poo), but - to be honest - I didn't think about the lanolin in it. I haven't been pre-washing it to get rid of any lanolin, but think that I'll start doing that from now on. As for the other objections - I think that it's a lot better than vaping polyester, or some of the other things that I've seen posted on ECF.

About how to use it: I used the same method that I've seen posted here for polyester. Does that ring a bell with anyone who can find that video and add the link to this thread? Since the "nibs" are kind of dense, I pulled them apart until the individual fibers were like a spider web, and then folded it back up gently (without squishing it back together too much), to a little bigger and longer than the size of my cart. I use the little straw mod in my cart to let the air up when you're drip/dropping/refilling your cart (a coffee stirrer or plastic q-tip cut to about 1/8" shorter than the top of your cart). I put my straw in first, and then push the wool in along side of that with a paperclip. I found that a paperclip was easier to use than a tweezers, but you may have another method that you like. Also, I can't really say how much I put in there ... I'm sure that y'all will find your own way with the density that works best with your pv after a time or two. After I have it pushed into the cart, I use a sharp scissors (I keep an embroidery scissors in my bag of tricks) to trim the stray fuzzies off of the top.

I probably shouldn't open up this can of worms, but if you want to email your address to me, I'll stick a bit in an envelope and mail enough for you to try it out before you buy (in the U.S.). I've got plenty ... and I can always edit this post after I get a hundred emails, right? LOL.
