To start off I am using an ego-c twist with Kanger EVOD or Protank. 35/65 vg/pg juice.
EVOD - 1.8 ohms at 4v
Protank – 2.4 ohms at 4.6v

My problem is that after about 3ml of juice (2 days for me) I have been getting a burnt tase and i believe it is due to burnt wick. I don’t chain-vape all day but for about 10-20 min every 1-2 hours I like to take a puff about every 5-30 sec. Is this asking too much? If so, what should I do? I have already tried removing the top flavor wicks but then it just leaks.

Also if you burn your wick due to it not getting enough liquid will it always taste burnt until replaced, or will the taste fade? Thank you for any help.

Don't take out the flavor wicks. They keep the coil wet with juice and prevent steaming liquid from flying into your mouth. They are there for a very good reason, and yes, depending on your juice, leaking will increase with their removal. Removal of these wicks will cause more heat to be spread over a smaller wicking area as well, and you may be burning your wick. I burn mine no matter what I do and replace them every two or three days. Apparently, that's unusual. I hear all the time about how their coils last one to two weeks. I've never made it past three days, and then my vape starts to suck, YMMV. Try replacing the head coil. If the vape becomes yummy again, then you have a burnt coil. First, try cleaning the coil and reinserting. Also, high voltage can do this as well. Keep your vape around 8 watts if you can. If you're not sure how to do that, post another thread and we'll explain all of that as well.

Your voltages are a little on the high side. Take a look at this chart:

Vaping Power Chart

You listed 35/65 VG/PG. Usually the PG percentage is listed first. Could this be the case? If so, 65 percent VG would be fairly thick and could be presenting wicking problems. Although with bottom coil clearos I don't know if it is as much of an issue.

Just a couple thoughts.

I was told the extra flavor wicks were “clogging” the atty and preventing wicking. Not sure if this is even remotely true but tried his advice and it only made my device leak.

I’m glad I’m not the only one going through coils every few days. Like you said, generally everyone says they can get theirs to last anywhere from a week to a month.

I was told Watts should be between 8-10…. Thanks for the chart.

You listed 35/65 VG/PG. Usually the PG percentage is listed first.

I meant 65pg/35vg… my mistake.

All in all I think I just need to suck it up and throw them out after a few days. Still a lot cheaper than cigs lol. Thanks guys.

It would be very difficult to burn a silica wick. If you have a piece of it laying around you could hold it over a lighter and see that it can take quite a bit of heat. People do this to "clean" the silica of impurities.

More likely one of two things is happening. Your setup isn't wicking fast enough and therefore your coil is running hotter because of the lack of juice to cool it down and overcooking the little juice it has or your coils have gotten hot enough to glow at some point and the gunk on them has turned to ash. This could cause it to taste ashy (is that a word?) for a while.

My suggestion is to cut down gradually on the voltage until you don't notice a burnt taste.

Also are you taking very long puffs? I could see that perhaps drying out the wick and causing a burnt flavor.

I use protanks daily and removing the flavor wick is a mistake. You do get better flavor at first once it is out but the coils burn out faster and the juice leaks into the draw tube often.

Keep the flavor wicks in and run your protank at 4.2v max and they should last you about 5-7 days before needing to be replaced or rebuilt.

I rebuild my coils and it cost very little money plus takes only 5 minutes or so per rebuild.

I don't know who made that chart, but I bet it was someone who wants to sell lots and lots of coils/replacement heads...... as far as Kangers anyway.

Yeah, don't mess with the wicks.

Lower your volts. I wouldn't smoke either of those Kanger heads over 3.7 or 3.8 Volts, not if you want good flavor and no burnt taste. ( dont know what that is in watts...could google a conversion chart

At the first sign/inkling of a burnt taste ( two days for me) ,take it out, clean the head/coil ( in Vodka or 90% plus alcohol for 20 mins or so, then rinse with water ) and set aside and let dry for 24 hours in a rotation pile. Put a new or previously washed head/coli in the tank. I can go for weeks like this with a couple heads.

I have a three user household here..got to conserve.

(learn that rebuilding if you are of the mindset..it ain't hard...look on youtube)

Yeah, I agree about the burning part, but not the blackening part, because I do rebuild my coils and I do know exactly what they look like in two or three days. Probably my juice. Very high concentrate of cinnamon and cotton candy with a bit of Bavarian cream - at 46%. Very high, I know, but that's what I like, and yes, it does blacken the wicks beyond repair. It does happen....a couple of times a week for me, every week for the last 6 months. Certainly, YMMV, but my point is that wicks don't automatically last one to four weeks. Many variables affect this. I've tried cleaning, dry burning, etc. It's easier to just recoil for me. I spend an hour and make enough wicks for the month. So, call it burnt, call it blackened, call it gunked up...it's all the same if the coil cannot be cleaned, resurrected and reused. Also, I vape 10 mils a day. Do you think that would cause it to go bad two or three times quicker? Best to you!

I am amazed at even having to replace them in a few weeks. I get 2-3 months out of mine. Maybe just my supplier and cleaning method but, I don't mind rebuilding mine, at around 1.50 USD per and 8-12 weeks on each, it's not even costly enough to think about as an expense to vaping.

And definitely don't remove the flavor wicks, leave them in there, they do prevent a lot of juice going where it isn't supposed to go in that volume. If you ar getting hot splatter even with the wicks in, vape a bit more gently to stop that - it isn't a cigarette, it's a personal vaporizer, it likes to be treated gently. :)

You're vaping at 8.88 watts on your coils which is certainly within the recommended range. I know more people that vape at 9 watts, than at 8 watts personally. I like my vape at 8 or 8.5 which is a tenth or two lower than you, so very close to the same. My wife like her vape at about 7.5 or 8. It's all a preference thing. Nothing wrong with your voltage. Could be your juice as others have mentioned.

btw, I'm vaping my juice on a 2.0 carto set at 4.4 volts on my Provari right now. Nice vape....9.68 watts.

Ok, Im getting a little confused now. I thought after reading the first few post that i just burnt my wick. Now im not so sure. After hearing you cant burn these wicks and Bill can go through 20-30 mils before changing but i only get 3mils? Im doing something wrong lol. I dont want to drive myself crazy over a part that last 3 days for $1.50 but I just dont get it. I will lower my watts to 7 (EVOD - 3.6v ProTank - 4.1) and hopefully i will see improvement. Thanks again everyone.

My guess is the juice, it's got a good bit of VG and it's a sweet flavor on top of that - probably need a good clean and dry burn - got caramel burnt on the coils.

No big deal to do, just find a video on cleaning a clearo, same basic procedure for any carto really, rinse a few times with water or vodka, soak 10 mins if it's really bad, dry out as best you can, or air dry for an hour, then dry burn it in 2-3 second burst with a 5 second rest between until you look down it and see the coils glow orange. (and it isn't putting out any vapor/smoke any more)

Yea I have done this a few times but my coils usually dont even look that bad, which is why I thought I was getting dry hits and burning my wick. I dont know how im getting dry hits on a bottom coil lol... but oh well... i will try a few things out and see where it takes me. thanks.
