I found with mine, it wasn't the wick that Imeo included. I had a juice that really loved to caramelize, and then turn to 'black Jack' (sugar burns past caramelization and turns to carbon) With other juices I didn't have this problem. It would give it a bad taste, and led me to believe it was the wick in the beginning. But YMMV :)

Good point my issue may have been the juice I use as well. But since on my first coil with the coil wrapped around the wick the gunk was on the wick not the coil hopefully the coil below the wick method will allow me to just change the wick out and reuse the coil.

fright, that's exactly how mine was, the caramelization was on the wick around the coil. eventually it would engulf the entire coil and then just plain tasted nasty. I think that the heat transfer from the coil to the wick was partially to blame. Though the silica material is made to take high heat it still transfers that heat along the wick, causing the caramel to form on it's surface. This problem was compounded by the fact that I vape at 6.4V on 3.5Ohms, a big hot coil.
