Idea and Question

I have been thinking about what Trog posted about the batteries being under powered, and since I had a 901 battery crap out here's my thought.

First I need to figure out how to dissect the battery without stripping the brass threads on the battery. That's the question part.

Second I will get a battery pack from radio shack, Plain old Lithium Ion batteries, a small push button switch, and a bit of wire.

Now I wire up the batteries to the switch, then to the terminals on the old battery. I now have a Cig with a manual switch and plenty of battery power. I read that a 1000-1500 mA battery should be fine.

Now granted this won't look pretty, a wired e-cig, with a battery pack on 4 or so feet of wire. But for in the house who cares.

So if anyone has taken apart the batteries, I need schooling.

sounds similar to what trog is doing too. its a good solution. to remove the threads, i think your going to need a vice, some kind of pliers and some real welly!

its actually not that difficult. what I did, was use a clamp and vice grips like dc2k08 stated. If you're careful, you can keep the paint and exterior pretty nice and clean. When one of my batteries took a crap, I ended up just dissecting it and making it into a USB plug. Its soooo unbelievably easy. Now I have a USB pass through device that works like a charm

You clamped the body, vise gripped the threads? Of course after taping or using cloth to protect things. The Brass fitting screw in or is it glued down?

Hmmm... USB connector... I can make the battery pack with a USB outlet so I can use the battery pack or the computer for power.

Clamped the body, protected with a rag. Then I simply took a bumm atomizer, screwed it on and wiggled it with vice grips. The brass fitting just has some glue.

Be VERY careful you don't pull to hard. Wiring is just about perfect.

Another good idea may be to take the end cap off where the led is, then use some type of rod to push the battery out towards the brass ring. this may actually be an easier option, and you don't have to worry about stretching or hurting any of the wiring.

careful not to puncture the battery if you try to push it out. i managed to puncture two batteries. A fun hissing sound comes out and it heats up a little bit.

I wound up taking off the LED end, wrapping up the tube with tape, one good whack with the blunt end of a drill bit and it all came out.

The only hard part now will be finding a switch that will fit in the tube. I should be able to dremmel the tube to less than an inch as well.

So is the proper amperage to shoot for 1000-1500 mA? 3.7 volts for sure right?

I'm curious about the man-made USB supply. I understood a USB port to only be able to supply 500ma as opposed to the 1000ma+ the atomizer normally draws? I have assumed the Janty USB cable used the battery to supplement the USB amperage with the battery, which would trickle charge the battery when not puffing? Can you draw 1000ma+ from a USB port?

I also want to know how the external battery project goes. Sounds like a feasible solution for around the house. Wired to a battery pack or the USB port...same difference.

I'll have to take a reading from the usb port. If I want to be industrial I could wire 2 usb plugs in parallel for the 1000 mA. I found the switch, but I have to cannibalize it from an old xbox wireless controller (it's the wifes). I should be done in a few days pending my regular chores.

would be nice to see some pics and diagrams of your radio shack powered e-cig invidregis..im sick of my 901's poor power rate... its good for about an hour then it seems to drop off.its very frustrating sooner there is a proper device on the market..the better.

I'm gathering the parts this week as time allows. I will start taking pics of the parts, assembly, and finished unit. As for diagrams... You'd be better off if I allowed my 3 year old nephew to draw it with crayons, than my art skills.

I have all the parts except the batteries which are in transit. I should have it finished in a week or so.

There will be a battery pack with a usb outlet. The battery pack will be about 2" x 3" x 1". If I get the mA reading I want the battery pack will consist of 2, AA size Li-Ion batteries, both rated at 900 mA.

A usb cable will attach to a switch inside the old battery tube, with the button sticking out of the top. If my soldering skills are still good, and everything goes like i hope, I should be able to either smoke from a usb port or from a battery pack on my belt.

I still want to find a small enough connector for the tip of the battery tube so I can switch the cable from pen to mini.
