Hi all,

I have been piecing together a mod that doesn't use batteries.
Variable voltage desktop style, so to speak.

I have been trying to piece together a few bits to make this and I have a circuit diagram to accompany this as well as a list of parts.

Main reason I want to make this without batteries is that I have an Ego / 808 etc to take out with me, why waste the batteries when I am at home if I don't need to..right.

I have tried to make sure I can build this without a soldering iron as I don't have access to one at the moment, this has bumped the cost up a little, having to get screw terminal switches etc.

I am mainly asking for advice / possible cheaper parts etc...

This is using a LM2596 module from ebay as my variable voltage.
9v power supply so that the LM module works from 1.5v - 7v approx (not that I need or want 7v, 6 would be my max)

The volt meter is so I know what voltage I am vaping at.

Ohmmeter so I can measure my carts / clearo's etc so I don't bust my 3A max limit.

I have the final switch to swap between vaping and ohm measurement, if I had both on at once then the ohmmeter would be getting all that voltage to it I believe. Do correct me if I am wrong.

Going with a standard 1/4 mono socket for the output with a separate "wand" to have the 510 and push button. The wand will have a 1/4 mono jack as it's wire to connect to the device.

Planing on making out of wood. Probably a piece of birch tree trunk, going for a round box with a birch branch "wand".

Please ask as many questions or give as much advice as you can / want

Cheers.

P.s. Will post as many pictures of this build as I can once I get going, once I am happy with the electronics I can move to the wood, which will take some time but I will try my best to document and show all of it!

I did have a look at that thread, lost of good info. Nice mod you made! like the idea of switching between a fixed input and the LM2296.
I saw that ebay listing but I wish to have an external adjustable meter, plus the ohmmeter is a matching meter, both look the same. Since it is being made out of a hollowed out birch log the meters need to be a bit bigger than the one attached to that board.

Cheers for the links though

In this thread, I list links to 4.5v, 5v, and 6v power supplies, all rated at 3 Amps. One of these may better fit the bill.
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/373303-can-you-say-diy-pass-through.html

Issue with those is that the OP wants to make a VV desktop unit. That means he has to use the LM2596 Buck regulator, or any other step down type regulator... And those will need much more than 6V input in order to be able to generate the 3.7V to 6V output that one regularly vapes at.

A 12V 3A AC/DC power supply is what the "vetrans" recommended to me when I asked the same type questions.
Something like this: 12V - 3A Power supply.. Doing a bit of search will find lots of other units at much better prices.

I know this is the modding forum, but how badly do you want to build this? I mean, I'm commissioning a fairly expensive e-hookah with VV and 2 hoses, so I understand where you're coming from.

But in your case, why not just get this? http://www.vaporbeast.com/product_p/sk49.htm I have one and it works very well for a "vape all day at my desk with no batteries" experience, I'm sure a UK vendor has them.

Sorry I haven't said much the past few days, real life getting in the way and all of that lol.

I am definitely going ahead with the build, just awaiting a few parts.

I would love to get a soldering iron, and yes there cheap, but I do already have one back i England, just not here in Norway. Seams silly to buy another :p

Will have a look at those 112v supplies. thanks for the link!!

xformulax - seen these before and thought about it, but rather liked the idea of building plus I then have more than just a few voltages, i have a whole range :)

If you want to go big and basic, a doorbell transformer will give you isolated 8V AC from the mains, and you can use a 10 ohm motor control rheostat and a volt meter to fine tune voltage at the atomizer. With a wooden desktop mod, the dial and meter could have a nice retro-tech analog look -- and it will never, ever wear out!
