Hello! I am reading through all the posts on building coils and am feeling very intimidated. I have a few questions:
1) What safety issues should I be aware of? I hear things here there to watch for such as: Don't fire your coil with dry cotton; don't touch coil to any metal; don't touch anything when firing; watc out for "hot legs" etc....any help with a list of thing to NOT DO would be helpful

2) I am not interested in "sub ohms" etc I just want a simple dual coil for testing e liquids and better flavor. What diameter is best? What ohms would be safest?

3) How many wraps should there be in a coil?

4) I see some coils touching and others with spacing-what is better? safer?

5) Some people recommend testing on something called a "cartometer"? Where do I buy these? Can a Vamo or MVP be used for testing or is that less safe?

6) I see many people recommending CVS sterile cotton. I wasn't able to find this yet but I did pick up Peaches n cream" yarn-what do I need to do to use this? Do I double this when using? Do I unravel this to use? Is there a major impact on flavor using this? What material is the safest?

7) I have the following wire on hand: Round Kanthal 32 gauge & Kanthal .5 x .1 which of these would you recommend and why?
Anything else I need to know to do this safely?
THANK YOU!!!

I have used this-yes I boiled it-simple like boiling pasta-just did a wad of it-maybe like 10 ft. Draqin on paper towel. Yes you dble it or even triple it
Do not unravel

That depends on the wire. Usually 5-6. Try it an d experiment. Use the peaches and Cream and triple it, wrap 5-6 wraps-attach to your posts and turn on device and read ohms.
You always work with device OFF because you are touching live wires when you are attaching coils
There is not harm in experimenting, even using the yarn time and time again until you have a coil right. Once you have it right discard your trial and errors and set up another one using the boiled material.

I found it easier to make the coil without the yarn and then twist and insert cotton into the coil.

wrap 5-6 wraps around needle (or smll screwdriver) attach to your posts-pull out needle (you should just have wire wrap attached-now twist up cotton and deed it through.

Even if you do not have proper wick right now-just practice with whatever you have and just do NOT vape on it until you have proper stuff. I read one time in forum about a guy using his cut up bathroom rug for practice

Never heard of this but I test on my VAMO. I also work while it is attached to my VAMO just make sure it is off until you have all devices such as tweezers and screwdrivers away from wires

I use 30 gauge and 5-6wraps and get a perfect 2.0
This is not my area of expertise but I saw you needed help so I am chipping in.
Remember you can just experiment and no harm done just do not vape until you have it right. If you did it wrong VAMO will say 9.9 (basically means FOUL0
Hmm not sure if you go up with numbr of wraps when wire is higer or go down.
Try both if you are into it right now.I built so many 'fouls" and scrapped so much wire and yarn and silica wick.

And what would be the safest ohms reading or starting out? Like 1.2 -1.4 ohms? Just wondering how I know if its safe to actually use?
Also, once you have a good one made, do you just replace the cotton? or do you replace the whole thing?

Safety issues
Device off until you are ready to check your coil-never work on it while it is turned on.
Device will short out before it blows up so no worried there-
You an check OHMS without firing it up so after you have built one turn it on and check ohms but do not fire if it is not right.
If it is right and you did it the way I do it without cotton in-you can fire it and see it glow red
Always use sterile cotton or yarn if you end up vaping on it.
You can practice on anything.

Anything under 1.8 is sub ohming I think. I would say anything 1.8 to 2.2 is alright. Just play around and work with it. Do not be intimidated. Once you dig into you will see, aside from being slightly tedious and fidgety it is kind of fun. I was exhausted by the time I got it right because it takes nimble fingers and good eyesight (or a magnifying glass)

that is the great thing about cotton, you can just pull it out with tweezers and put a new piece in. Be careful not to jostle the coil once you get it right

When using a lighter to "bur off junk" should it turn the wire black? The black seems to wipe right off. Also, I am wrapping one but the coils don't want to stay close together? (Sure seems easier in the videos LOL)

I have never done this "burning off junk" Never heard of it until the other day. Maybe they mean just like you would stick a needle under a flame to sterilize? When you do that the needle turns black for a minute but the black also wipes off.
As far as them staying close together.. you want them spaced evenly apart and you have to wind TIGHT. It takes a rhythm to get it right-that is why it seems easier to do it without the cotton because, for me, the cotton kept going under the needle, behind the needle, etc

Anything under 1 ohm is sub-ohm by definition.

Go with 1.4 ohms total using 32 gauge wire (assuming dual coil) on a mech, the higher resistances will be fine if you use a regulated mod at 4.5+ volts.

Sub-ohming is when resistance is below 1 ohm
Sorry cloudz, hadnt got there yet:)
