I'm about ready to give up.

I ordered an IGO-W, 28 gauge kanthal, 1.5mm silica. I can make a coil using a machine screw or a screw driver but I cannot for the life of me get the silica to thread through. The last coil I made I was finally able to get a decent amount of wick through but when I put it on my eVic the ohms started bouncing around like crazy like so many times I've seen on my multi-meter. I could go grab some organic cotton balls and that would fix my wick issue but I'm in over my head when it comes to this multi-meter stuff. What does it mean when the ohms bounce around? Using the meter, how do I know if its shorted or not?

Are you building micro coils or are you building regular coils and just using the screw to get an even wrap?

If you are just building regularly spaced coils, i would suggest trying to free hand the wrap. I tried all the other methods and they did not work. It was not until I slowed down and wrapped the coil carefully, that it started to work.

My first couple wicks on my IGO-l I did with 3mm silica doubled over. I do 3-4 wraps and get 1.7 - 2.1 ohms. The resistance jumping around can mean a lot of things. Make sure the coil doesn't touch the top cap. You also have to make sure the coils aren't up against the posts. After the coil is attached you can use some sort of pointy device, like a pin or toothpick and work the coils so they are even and all that good stuff.

I've also wrapped around a q-tip and wicked with cotton. It works pretty good, except I like some thick juices and seem to run into difficulties with it wicking. I'm sure it's something I'm not doing right.

Currently I'm using SS mesh and have had great results. But the resistance seems to fluctuate quite a bit at first then settles in.

I hand wrap most everything. It takes a couple times to get it down.

Is this your first attempt at rebuilding? It can be pretty frustrating at first, but after you get the hang of it the payoff is fantastic.

Bro, watch this short video. It'll get your build where it needs to be :)

When you are pushing the silica through the coil, you need to twist it while gradually working it through ("drill" motion). The direction you twist should tighten the twist the silica already has, twisting it the other way will make it fray like crazy. Otherwise keep trying the hand wrap method, there are lots of videos showing how to do it on YouTube. For 1.5mm silica, you will probably want to fold it over 3 or 4 times to get sufficient wicking. If all else fails, cotton balls make it extremely easy. Just don't fire the coil when the cotton is dry.

As for jumping ohms, you just have a bad connection. Wrap the legs 180 around the screws and just tighten snug, doesn't have to be very tight.

like everyone else said, it's best to wrap it free-hand. your coils won't be nice and pretty like they are if you use a screw, but they'll work.

also, i think someone else may have mentioned this, but if you have big portions of your coil that aren't in contact with your wick, they'll tend to cause some pretty intense throat hit, since they're just heating up and don't have any liquid touching them to keep them cooler.
