Robino (hope you are on your way to bed now) - I will construct my own personal doc for CASAA replies. I re-read your post and understand that is best. My NBC News article reply (link above) was too wordy, and written when I was way too pi$$ed/emotional. I will edit that down, but add some more facts for my CASAA doc.

I renewed my membership with CASAA tonight to make sure that I get all notifications. I promise to make this my primary cause from this point forward, because I have now converted over 30 people to ecigs over the past year. I cannot let them down.

WE CANNOT GIVE UP THE FIGHT TO KEEP THIS RIGHT!

I too am appalled at the mis-information from the general press. Unfounded claims, negative comments, for no apparent reason. I just don't get it.
And what's with all this, 'it makes people nervous' BS. Why does it make them nervous? England banned vaping on commuter trains because it 'made people nervous'? Really?

People have seen my PV and said, "oh, those are worse than cigarettes". What? Where are they getting this BS?
Someone said, "Those look like what you do drugs with." What???

That's like 'ban tattoos' because I don't like they way they look.

How 'bout ban Myle Cyrus because she's obnoxious?

Why isn't the Drexel Universtity study getting any press? Isn't getting any traction in the media, what's that about?

FDA just needs to stay the hell out of it. We don't need more government intervention.

3 weeks without a regular cig now...:toast:

As an individual, what can I do to help spread the word about all the benefits of ecigs, and what can we all do as a group? There's CASAA, and that's wonderful (and I appreciate everything they do), but is it enough?

So why don't you have a link to CASAA at the bottom of your posts like many us CASAA supporters have?

I too am dismayed by all the negative coverage recently in the news. My local paper, The Orange County Register, always includes in their story's the same old exploded diagram of an ecig and description, and always describe the "chemicals" like pg. as a"solvent". They always make an attempt to balance the story by adding "while the dangers of ecigs appear to be minimal, further "studies" are needed. But it is always after an entire article of fear and misinformation.
I always check the editorial section next day thinking someone will surely write in to comment on the story, but no one ever does. So I started writing and sending in my own comments. Guess what? They never get published! Seems they aren't interested in the truth!

Ok I'm done with my rant. Thank you.

There have been some positive stories out there as well, but I feel as though they are not getting the same attention, sensationalism or press coverage as the negative stories and public sentiment is leaning towards the negative side.

That is the sad truth about anything. Many people probably do not even know this but when TV was first introduced, in order to receive approval for a channel to broadcast they had to agree to dedicate 30 minutes each night to the news and do so WITHOUT commercial interruption. The reasoning for this was so that ratings would not drive the News.

Fast forward to today now that News broadcasts do have commercials and now ratings are what drives the stories. What get more ratings? Warm fuzzy feel good stories? No. It's the OMG horrible stories that get people to tune in. This is why the negative stories get the most press.

If we really want News to change we need to get advertising dollars removed from the equation...in fact there should be ZERO monitary gain for choosing one story over another. Until this happens NOTHING will change.

Really..............

Now I'm not bashing CASAA, but I dont think bumper sticker patriotism will help here on ECF anymore then it does in real life.

Wow, have ecigs received a lot of bad press lately. I fear more bad press is on the way as we head towards October and a possible FDA notice of proposed ecig regulations. I say possible because we don't know what the FDA will do or if they will delay it, yet again.

There have been some positive stories out there as well, but I feel as though they are not getting the same attention, sensationalism or press coverage as the negative stories and public sentiment is leaning towards the negative side.

I sit here at my computer reading all this stuff and wonder what I can do as an individual to help balance the equation. I post here, on other forums and reply to stories on the news websites, but does it help balance things out? I don't see the headline "ECig's help 25 year, pack a day smokers quit cigarettes" plastered all over the place.

As an individual, what can I do to help spread the word about all the benefits of ecigs, and what can we all do as a group? There's CASAA, and that's wonderful (and I appreciate everything they do), but is it enough?

You CAN write back.

Be surprised how many authentic news outlets both small and great........are SO picking up "amateur"(in pay) reports now.
Lot of these negative reports are coming from "guest" writers......AKA someone not on the staff. Who sent in their writing and the editor thought was decent enough to post.

If the Negatives can get published...the 20 year smoker quit story can too. Just takes the right writers and some ambition to push their side.

I'm sure some where in our ranks we have the right folks to pull this off....just need a push.

The more members CASAA has, the larger and louder voice we have. It does seem as if the ANTZ are really ramping up the attack. Join CASAA, if you haven't already. When the Calls to Action show up, send your story to all the names that they list. Mine is a word document that I can copy and paste easily into an email.

We must be somewhat effective or the ANTZ wouldn't be so scared of losing ground. There are good articles out there, but the news stations are going for the shock value stories.

Maybe someone can find out email addresses for the major news stations and we should all send our stories out to them.

Don't get disheartened. It is a battle worth fighting. :)

Totally agree we need to help CASAA all we can. They are facing the FDA, Big Tobacco and who knows what else.

It's like David facing Goliath, except this time David is going to need a lot more than one rock.

I've thought about writing an article or two and trying to get it published in our local newspapers. How does one go about pitching a story to an editor of a small town paper?

I'm not much of a writer, either. I can write, but I hate it. Anybody have an outline of a good short positive e-cig article?

I like that idea, but maybe simpler to send them all a link to the CASAA tobacco harm reduction success stories collection? I can't seem to find a link to the collection though. Does it exist?
ennagizer, the advice from Robino is good--please join CASAA and maybe donate a little to CASAA so that those who work so hard for us are able to continue the work.

PM Kristin. She is very good at constructing ecig letters for media consumption.
