I think it's great that you recommend mods to newbies. I wish that I would have stumbled on one of your post suggesting mods when I first started. I had no idea mods existed. I've since purchased an inexpensive box mod and I love it. I wish I would have started with a box mod and worked my way up from there. Keep suggesting because some of us are listening.

I wouldn't say stop, because you are right other options are needed in the New Member's sub-forum. The NM forum is a tricky area to help people broaden their knowledge, because it isn't only a place for people first time looking into electronic cigarettes, but sometimes the first time for people in the forum scene in general.

I know my first time with an ecig and ECF I only knew of the ONE supplier sub-forum I ordered from. I have never been on forums before (only message boards back in the day) so I didn't realize the plethora of knowledge floating around in ECF.

I say if the OP's original question has already been answered, there is nothing wrong in letting that member know that there ARE other options out there(or answer the OP's question and add more info). I believe even if they don't need the info in the present they will have something to research should that desire for 'something better' occurs in the future.

I feel people sometimes forget that a thread might not only help the person creating it, but help someone lurking through them, and as long as the OP's question isn't ignored or minimized ANY information can be helpful.

Very interesting discussion. When I first started e-cigs again in January, mods seemed so out there that I blanked out whenever I saw one mentioned. After three weeks with my REO, I've come to these conclusions:

1. For me, the Ego taught me that e-cigs were an adequate replacement for Pall Malls. The REO taught me that vaping was better than a cigarette could ever hope to be.

2. On the simple scale, the REO has to be near the top (not that there hasn't been problems).

And yet, what I figured out is that most people just aren't interested. I know 20+ vapers where I work, they all see me with my REO and ask about it, they all hear me talk about how much I like it, but only one seems interested in actually getting one (or any other mod).

I think when it all comes down, we're a tiny minority of e-cig users. Yes, the high-end mods are very hard to get, but really represent almost zero percent of e-cig sales. I'm guessing Joye can probably roll more 510s and Egos off their assembly lines in minutes than all the high-end (and low-end) mods ever produced.

Still, there's absolutely nothing wrong with with gently suggesting them for new users. I've done it and I'm not unhappy that I did.

Random thought: if a million people suddenly decided they wanted mods, we'd be auctioning ours off like Stradivarius violins.

The thing is If I would have found the REO when I started it would have saved me all kinds of money. Like about 300.00 just starting out. 2 Ego kits, 901 kit and an 808 kit. Countelss amounts of cartos. People just dont want to listen.

And when newbies state they want their PV to be as close to an analog as possible, I personally think what many of them want, without knowing how to say it, is that they want the "inhaled feel" of an analog. They won't get that with an analog sized PV. Although I agree with you ClumsyGirl that many do think that they want the look of an analog. To me that is when you want the seasoned, experienced vaper to explain the differences.

wv2wn, you must be a seasoned, experienced vaper -- I love how you put it, "They want the "inhaled feel" of an analog. They won't get that with an analog sized PV." Well said!:)

Although I gave wv2win some thoughts on this yesterday :) I really do believe in what WhataClumsyGirl said:

"Don't give up unsure...you might help one person to avoid all the cost and hassle of a multitude of devices before they try a mod. And, if you helped one, then it was worth it."

If I saw any opening for the possibility of a mod - like a 3 pack a day guy - I'd offer up the protege at the time or the bartleby. And Brad's box mod is a real bargain. I got many PMs thanking me from people who realized they 'skipped ahead in line' by bypassing some models. That said, I stopped with the arrival of my first 510 kit.

Glad you are sticking with it Gil. We NEED nice people like you. Willing to give the time. Clumsy is right. All is won if we help just one. Why just this morning I received a thank you email from someone I helped a few months back. The title was 'chains' or something because of the chain reaction caused by my gesture. El is right tho. We do need to report any nastymails. And I get those too. There are always going to be those that disagrree. We just have to ignore those and keep on helping.

Unsure, the problem isn't you, not at all. The problem is the proliferation of available devices and the number of competing opinions. For someone who's only seen e-cigs in TV advertisements or been exposed to them through the "Get the truth about e-cig" links that invariably end up being overpriced super mini vendor sites, the world of mods can seem confusing, to say the least.

I think that most people who try e-cigs are looking for a healthier alternative to cigarettes, not a new hobby or technical interest. I also think that most smokers are skeptical of e-cigs to start with, so there isn't much of a justification to become familiar with the components, terms and manufacturers.

I'm not trying to pick on anybody, but here are a couple of points:

Who-dat, I almost always recommend the Riva 510 kit from LF with 2ohm Boge cartos to new people. <...>
Oh also, the Minis should be available in a week or two. You can use your cartos on them if you like. :)

Who's Riva?

Is Boge a brand name or some particular model?

What's a "carto"?

2ohm? What does that mean? Is that like amps? Can people get electrocuted from e-cigs?

Are you suggesting that I buy a "kit" and then buy some other brand part that replaces something that is included in the kit? :?:

Or does "kit" not refer to a complete e-cig that I can just use out of the box?

How can I tell if everything that I need comes in a "kit", and if everything I need comes with the kit, why would I want to buy replacement parts from day one?

Does that mean that the kit comes with bad parts?

Does somebody besides "Riva" sell kits that are complete and come with "good" parts to start with?

What's a mini? Why would I get that? If I can use the Boge cartos (still not sure what a carto is) with it, does that mean that I don't need the Riva?

I think a cheap 3.7v box mod is the best way to start out.

ice

Does the 2ohm thing go with the 3.7v thing, or is that too many amps?

And that's just two random comments. Add in the other ten people making similar noises and the fifty people who seem to be split between the eGo, the Tornado, the 510 and krd whatever thing, and the contradictions that all of their posts raise, and the average smoker is going to just light another.

For every two people here swearing by the eGo-T, there's at least one (like me) who think that the tank attys are garbage and have little good to say about it. For all of the people who suggest starting with a 510 because it's easy to move to and a better value than the ripoff cigalikes (blu, whitecloud, etc) there are an equal number of people talking about how they moved to their box mod after getting sick of the hassle of dealing with the 510. Their favorite box mod is the best thing ever, except for the fact that you have to get on a waiting list to get one .

It doesn't help that half the time people start arguing with one another in a mild way as to which is better, one post says that "X" is great, the next post is a horror story about what a waste of money "X" is.

Again, I'm not trying to pick on anyone, but the e-cig market is confusing: should I get the Titan or just a 510? Is the eGo-T better than the TW Tornado Tank? What's the difference between the Mini and the Super-Mini? Does the 4082 have more amps than the 4081?

I went through some of the evolution myself, starting with a 4081-type unit that I never had to think about, it just worked and initially the battery lasted a reasonable amount of time and the only choices I had to make was whether or not to get a subscription for one of the two flavors and two strengths of refill cart.

I switched to the 510 and it seemed pretty cool for awhile, until the batteries started dying and I got sick of the continuous top off. I upgraded to the eGo-T and you know, the battery is great, the atty is garbage and a waste of money.

Dripping seemed cool until I wrecked too many auto-batteries, and cartos were a welcome relief after blowing a half-dozen T attys in 6 weeks, but of course I managed to kill another battery before I got my fill technique straight.

I'd be annoyed about all the money I've wasted if I hadn't saved so much over the 6 months where I didn't know about anything better than the super mini from Smoking Stick. For me, I most likely should have gone to a decent box mod, a nice VV unit or something like the GGTS instead of wasting time and money on the Joye products, but I'd invested in lots of 510/eGo stuff before I ever even heard of a box mod or tried using cartomizers, and after going through so much money, time and effort, I'm wondering why I moved off the super-mini in the first place.

People have to start somewhere, and the truth of it is that a site like GreenSmoke is the most "newbie-friendly" place to go, even if they are selling what most of us see now as overpriced under-powered junk.

@Codex Gigas... Exactly, it may cause someone to ask more questions, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sure if your example posts were the only posts in the tread.. it would be like throwing a goldfish out into the open sea, but doesn't hurt for a person to know that there is a world beyond the basic ecig (even if it ends up not being necessary for that member).

It's hard for a new person to know what they are getting into without having something in hand to reference, and that is overwhelming to some during their first quest. That's why if someone that has some background and experience in the vaping world wants to share their knowledge, no matter how 'advanced' it may seem for the newbee, shouldn,t worry about doing so. Threads will always be there for the reading and the rereading, and hopefully assist in anyones research.

You do have valid points to keep in mind though..

Thanks for the nice comments, Delilah. And yes, I'm seasoned, experienced and getting to be an old fart. When you read some new person wanting "more vapor", you will see many people suggest switching to VG eliquid which would give more "visible" vapor. I would bet, however, that when a new person says that, 80% of them are really saying they want more of the "inhaled feel" of an analog. They just don't know how to express it in "vaper speak". I would like the term "inhaled feel" to be used more frequently because I think it would clear up some miscommunications.

Thank you all for your kind comments and support. Yesterday I was in a ...... off mood due to the PMs but today Im fine thanks to you all. Now that I had time to think about it....the idiots who PMed me all had given good, fair advice to the newbies on the threads. They were jerks to PM me about my opinions/suggestions. I am sure everyone did have a common goal to help the newbies to quit smoking by providing them with helpful advice....including the ones who sent me the PMs. Several people here said the new members need to make that journey we all did and Im thinking their right. That said, I still feel giving them all options and the wisdom of us as veterans is the right thing to do. Its easy to forget how I felt when I first started down this road. Wanting to quit smoking but not really sure about this thing called electonic cigarette. Not sure if its a gimmick...or how much I should first spend to try it? I can see the word "MOD" can be intimidating for someone new and wanting something that resembles a cigarette is newbies first reaction. I'll back off for awhile and just checking things out. If I see some bogus info I'll step in and comment. Still a break is probably a good thing for me now....besides it will give me more time to hassle all of you here. :)

Two weeks ago I found out about e-cigs by bumping into the Heigl-Letterman vid while googling something. Wow, I should try that. Googled disposables, didn't like the concept of automatic credit card charges so bought one for about $11 shipped and gave it a whirl. Ok, I can do this. My thoughts were to find a reputable store, tell them what I wanted and they'd recommend the perfect one for me. I soon found out it was a lot more complicated than that so I dug a little deeper and found this board.

So I'm giving you a perspective from a recent newbie regarding suggestions. Now I may be a little more geeky than average, I used to be deeply into cigars and was even a blind taste tester for Smoke magazine and a well-know poster on cigar boards, restored ancient Roman & Greek coins, then settled on my main and best hobby which is restoring pinball machines. So I know about boards from back when it was purely Usenet.

At first I was daunted by the plethora of options and the amount of info plus new lingo and abbreviations. I was definitively affected by the clash of advice for the starter kits as opposed to the obvious reality that most vapers branced off from them into other systems including mods, fatboys etc. I wanted to know more, because if that's the case, I'd rather pass Go and collect my $200 instead of spending cash on stuff that would soon be supplanted by something else.

So I absolutely loved ALL the suggestions, I was like a monkey in the zoo, feed me, feed me. It did take many days researching the posts, reading the tutorials, watching vids etc but that helped me decide what I wanted for my first purchases. I didn't go for some that fascinated me such as the Reo etc, but bought a Go-go and Brad's box mod. Loved what I heard about them. Go-go is great for me, just fill a carto once a day or two, change a bat about the same time and vape! Looks reasonable for social vaping without trying to simulate a cig and is comfortable to hold. I plan to use the box mainly as a convenient way to try out the multitude of flavors I will be exploring. I could not have made my choices without the info from the posts on the board and am extremely grateful for all the posts, likes and dislikes, pleasures and problems, opinions and disses, they all helped.

On a personal level, when I was strongly considering Brad's box mod, I thought Unsure's post recommending it, DESPITE his obvious adoration for the Reo, was a strong deciding factor. I can't speak for all newbies but I for one did not want to go through 5 steps of purchasing before finding what I really wanted. The 501s and 808s are very well covered, I would have felt a disservice if there was no way I could have been presented with all the other alternatives.

So for all the other noobs like me that find there way here, please keep posting and blow off the naysayers who are probably stuck in their own thinking or self-serving their own interests.

Two fantastic opinions from two new vapers. Thank you both!

It IS completely confusing, and every post raises all that many more questions. That is why I usually tell people to "read, read, read"! This board is filled with oodles of information. I've been here a year, and I STILL find things I didn't know.. and everyday there are more new things to learn!

There is nothing wrong with that. Having been brought up in a "it's good to ask questions" and "one is never too old to learn" household, diving into the world of vaping, was pleasurable to me. My grandparents are in their 90's and still believe in learning. But I also recognize that everyone is not the same. Some people like simple. For myself, I now need simplicity in my life.

We are all different, and there is no one correct answer.

So my advice; keep doing what you are doing. There will always be someone out there that you will help with your advice. And advice is just that: an opinion. Opinions are not right or wrong.

.......I can see the word "MOD" can be intimidating for someone new and wanting something that resembles a cigarette is newbies first reaction...........

I think we should "retire" the word "mod" and I hate the term "fat battery". I think both terms are misleading, intimidating and for some, presented in negative way. I've been using the term "better battery" to describe what we commonly refer to as a "mod". I think it is more descriptive and has a positive connotation.
