Smoked for years with no staining (I'm .... about cleaning my teeth..spend ages, twice daily)
Month back took a closer look and to my horror the backs were dark brown!
Straight to the hygienist to be told..."your a smoker"....but I haven't smoked for a year. She spent a hour cleaning, all good. One month later and it's back! Its a varnish like deposit that scrapes off (needle or some other metal implement) ....Also noticed similar deposits on the vape mouth-piece. Any thoughts folks?

Low quality nic base? Energy drinks? Get teeth cleaned and don't vape for awhile, see if it turns up again in the same amount of time that the residue appeared before. You can use gum or a patch.

Coffee and tea are known to stain teeth.... vaping not so much. Not at all, if I remember correctly there was a study done that shows it does not.

No time to find the link (it's here somewhere on ECF). I've got to toddle off to work now. :D

Yes I read a similar thing and it actually involved dentists with them saying how no staining effects were seen from vaping.

If that is your theory and if you find the staining objectionable then stop vaping.
We all thank you for your warning, now I am off to have a good squonk.

Weird. The complete opposite of my experience. My dentist doesn't bother with the clean anymore and praises the cleanliness of my teeth since i stopped smoking.
(yet another saving to add to the growing list)
Now we all need to know what in tarnation you be vaping...

As much as you all are hating on this person, I've experienced the same thing. I wouldn't call it "varnish" but I have gotten a black film on my front teeth. It brushes off but it's quite annoying. I tracked it down to the SMOK TFV12 Prince tank and the Crown 3. I don't know if it's how I hold the drip tip in my mouth or what. I stopped using those 2 tanks and the black marks stop. It's weird.

I smoked for 37 years and switched to vaping six years ago with no negative dental impact. There has certainly been no darkening of my teeth. I also don't recall ever hearing about vaping negatively affecting teeth.

My thought is something else has changed for you and is affecting your teeth.

Best of luck with it @SPR4X !

Over the past eight years, at my semi-annual visits, my dental hygenist spends less than half the effort on me than when I smoked. She's happier...I'm happier. The whole process is much easier to endure.

Same here, now if I quit coffee I think I'd be home free.

I think it’s all the leftover tar from years of smoking escaping your lungs. May take awhile but when the varnish is no longer there, your lungs are clean. Vaping cleans the lungs, the vapor goes in the lungs and steam cleans the tar from your lungs and is exhaled. Sorry there’s no way around it shouldn’t have smoked all them years. Those things are terrible for you.

I think I would be looking at what has changed in the past month that could be causing this problem. If you haven't changed anything else in your life have you started using a different device. If it has a metal drip tip (mouth piece) maybe it is made of a metal that doesn't agree with your teeth.

I have been vaping for over 7 years and have never experienced what you are so have to think it isn't something that would normally happen. I wear dentures and my vaping doesn't stain them. Smoking yes, vaping not at all.

Hopefully you will stick around and get to the bottom of this.

Wow, guys, thanks so much for your open arm heart warming reception, and greatly appreciated insights and advice. So back to me.... I've been on copious amounts of tea, coffee, red wine, fags (cigs) and Shellac (don't knock it till you've tried it) for decades.....never had this "issue". Nvee premium nic salt btw.... Oh and please forgive me for any misunderstandings, be assured that I'd never presume to "warn" those who are clearly better qualified than I. xx

That sounds like tartar and if so, is most likely NOT caused by vaping but rather from NOT smoking. Smoking can make your mouth less hospitable to the plaque that calcifies to become tartar. When you quit smoking this plaque was able to reproduce more effectively. Also some people get tartar worse than others because of different enzyme levels that cause the plaque to calcify (harden).

One thing about vaping that can contribute is if you have chronic dry mouth. This can be countered by drinking more water. Also if you sleep with your mouth open (perhaps due to sinus issues etc.) this will cause your mouth to become exceptionally dry and contribute to more tartar.

Finally drinking colored beverages can cause the plaque to become brown before it calcifies.

Good luck with this. Seems like you got some useful thoughts to work with here.

I'm intrigued by the Shellac comment. I use it a lot on wood and I keep a bag full in my fridge. Never heard of it being ingested though. How does that work?
