I'm new and pretty sure LR attys DO kill Rivas

Hi! I've been vaping for a little over 4 months. I quit smoking cold turkey on a super fab KR8 and then was gifted a Riva(gold)/Ego(silver) and a whole bunch of atomizers and cartos. The LR atty was suggested to be used with the Riva/Ego and that sure is a sweet combo but the batteries started shorting on me. To be exact, 3 Rivas and 2 Ego in batteries 3 months pulled the stays on after the button is released and shorts out act.

I couldn't understand what the heck was going on, a couple of the batteries shorted within hours of each other. Very frustrating. I even lurked all over this site looking for other having the same problem. All I could find was the elusive myth of someone "saying" LRs kill Rivas but nothing tangible.

Well 5 batteries in 90 days for me seems to indicate they indeed do.

I was direct dripping into LR attys each time. The atty did survive each time, although may have contributed to the next battery shorting out? It was not always the same LR atty being used but the two that died within hours of each other were with the same atty.

Same series of events each instance. vaping normally, everything functioning fine, when the battery suddenly doesn't shut off after a drag when I release the button. I am SURE it is hitting at much higher volts then normal when this happens as the atomizer heats up fast to the point of giving you a severe burn if you try to touch it after 5 seconds or so. If you ever try to screw an atty onto the battery again it fires upon contact until the battery dies, which happens almost immediately, even in the case of a fresh charged battery shorting. After it flashes and dies it either remains green on the charger forever or remains red (without the pre-charge flash sequence) forever. Kaputt.

Each time this happened I was direct dripping into an LR atty. I did have regular attys but really preferred the LRs, and since they were recommended I kept using them.

Yes this started to turn into a bad joke after #4 and #5 going within 2 hrs of each other.

So after all that I'm done with LRs on Riva/Egos, regular attys only for me (bummer). I'll hope I can assume this truly what's shorting these batteries out and they can safely be used LONG TERM (over 30 days that is) with regular attys as I'm seriously in love with the Riva/Ego.

And hi! Glad to be here

Honestly, it sounds like you're having a case of stuck buttons. An atty shouldn't fire as soon as it's screwed to a batt unless the circuit was being completed at the button. Do they all click fine when they're pressed?

I know you would think right? But in all 5 shorted batteries the button was NEVER depressed while the short circuit (presumed) was occuring. I could push and release the button as per normal, even tried doing that once as the first instinct IS that the button is stuck somehow but no dice. On one Riva battery that had shorted, I even removed the silicone rubber button and poked around beneath it. The tiny plastic button on the computer chip beneath that button casing was also not depressed or stuck in the down position in any way either. I could click it on/off on the circuit just fine with no sticking or apparent malfunction.

I did not try this on the Ego as the hard plastic button seems not very easy to remove and I'm not techy like that with elec's.

I would get another mod and keep using the LR attys If I were you.. Just my 2 cents.. lol

Sorry you lost all those battys,, Bummer for sure..

Any recommendations? Lol, considering I was quoted as saying you'll get my Riva away from me when you pry it from my cold, dead fist.

But this issue is for the birds so I'm open to comparable mods.

Token, you could try the Ego If you want to stay with that form factor but I would go with a non proprietary battery option and get cheaper battys that last longer anyways,

There are so many good mods out there it is hard to list just a few but my preference is not how small the mod is, it is how well and long it lasts..

The Buzz notcigs.com multi volts medium size and light weight
Little Sister is very small and multi volt.. boxmods.net tiny. about the size of a bic lighter.. excellent.

I have had most of what is offered for sale.

The above 2 are the ones I favor most and don't let me down..

ANY atty or cartomizer can kill the eGo/Tornado/Riva battery. The basic battery design doesn't have a robust short-circuit protection.. and if the resistance of the atty or cartomizer drops much below 1.4Ω, the driver circuit (MOSFET) for the battery can/will fry.

I've had this happen with Boge cartomizers, regular 510 atomizers, and of course.. the LR atties.

But I do acknowledge that it appears to be more probable with the LR atties.

Haven't had a lr atty kill any batteries. I have killed the battery life. lr 510 on my ego (650mAh) lasts 5-6 hours of heavy vaping. DSE-905/lr901 atty (900 mAh)lasts about 7-8 hours of heavy vaping. I have a Hello 016/stock atty (1300 mAh) I have not been able to figure out how long the batt lasts. I've had it since Monday and charged it once, been using it intermittently throughout the week, but have picked it up everyday quite a few times.

Agreed, I'm past size factor. I just need a good hit off my stick and something that won't leave me high and dry.

Btw, Ego fried on me too, not just Riva.

Cheaper would be nice, $23 bucks and 3 days wait at best to replace something that fries randomly that I NEEEEEEED... well, no good.

I currently have back up in an HV Indulgence mod but would like a reg use PV with good TH.

In any case, ima surf around and tweak this new "hobby" as I go. This forum is a great reference.

Thanks for all the great replies, keep 'em coming.

I got a Rive as my first e-cig. It works fine for me. It is my understanding that the battery is protected, so there is no way for the juice to get into the battery. Am I mistaken? I have not used LR attys but I am using a custom atty from Xtreme Vaping. They are 1.8 - 1.9 ohms. Levy checked them before he shipped. See them here- 10 Each Xtreme Vaping XV510 Atty's

If I encounter any problems with my Riva I will repost.

yes dlbald, the Riva is a sealed battery so there is no way for juice to enter it and short it out.

Please do keep us posted on your Riva/LR combos performance. It works so well together I'm bummed it seems to be such a fatal combo. I'd sure love someone to prove it was just a crappy atty manufacturer or something.

edited because I realized you said it was a custom atty/Riva combo not LR. Checking out your link now.
