Yeah, I like it wide open too; but that has more to do with how much build is in there. In early experiments, I was getting some nice vapes with higher res. single coils and the air closed down to ~1.2mm (classic/factory) and such.

Building on the Nuppin makes me feel like I'm just learning how to build coils again and on top of that, dealing with MM wire is a PITA, but it sure vapes nice.
