One of my 14500 IMR (BDL) Got too hot to touch after about 5 hours (Charge was dieing out), which got me wondering if they are just "safe-er", and not "safe". Are the words "safe Chemicals" giving us a false sence of security?

Like kay said, they are safer, they will not vent in flames or explode like a lithium ion.
Another thing, you do not want to discharge imr batts down past 3.5, once the hit starts getting wimpy take it out and replace with another one, imr do not have protection for overdischarging.

Although the chemical make up of the cells is different these days. I don't think that there is a truly safe battery on the market. This is just my opinion.
This is a topic I have been asking about lately. I just got a alpha ultralite and it came with IMR 10440's. I had been using a joyestick with ICR's so which are safer. Do I even want to use either one of those. I also bought some protected batts from madvapes and am now totally paranoid to even use my original IMR batts, should I be?
i recommend for a peace of mind just get AW protected batteries,they are the black and silver ones..cost a lil more but gives me a piece of mind.
If paranoid about batts go with the AW Protected as Kay said. I dont worry about IMR AW batts at all. maybe that's just me.
Out of the thousands of users of Li-Ion batts there has been a few cases of problems and a few of those were people that had incorrectly inserted batts backwards and were also using unprotected cr2's back in the days when we didn't have a choice on batts to choose from. Can an accident happen, sure it can, but how many people have we heard about out of the thousands of users using these newer batts? Almost none.

Thanks for the help! I think Atavanhalen hit it om the head, I had over-discharged it. It is in my charger now and not heating up so I don't think it's ruined. I will endeavor to swap them out after about4 hrs to be safe(er).

The tests I have seen show that even compared to the imr 10440s the aw 10440 holds a higher charge for longer, you dont need to be paranoid about anything especially with those lil batteries, just remove them from your mod when they start hitting wimpy.
I am too chicken to use the Joye batts in my alphalite. They say they are protected but still chicken. I guess at some point I will get over it when I need a charge and my current batts are dead. I am even too chicken to charge my joye batts in the ultrafire charger that came with almost identical batts. I keep using the joye junk charger. oh well I guess I will charge em outside and see.
Under the right (well wrong) circumstances any battery can fail spectacularly. That includes the battery in you car. The key to it all is following "best practices" and practicing due diligence in the care and use of your gear.
Follow the battery manufacturer's recommendations, charge carefully and do not leave batteries unattended for long periods while charging. A little paranoia goes a long way toward preventing a nasty incident. I highly recommend buying (and learning to use) a multimeter. A DMM is a must have tool for any vaper, and is also useful at home for other non vape related reasons.
