Hey guys, just joined the forum, but I've been lurking to get some help with my beginning stages of vaping. So far, I've got a pretty good grasp on everything. But I'm still green behind the ears when it comes to mods. Idk which ones are good and which ones to avoid. Nor do I know how much power I'm gonna "need" later on down the road. I started with an ego pen of course. And soon graduated to an istick and mini pt3 setup. I used that as a learning tool and experI ment block. I learned to build and wick cools, and how to modify airflow. So, now that I have some knowledge, I wanted to step up in performance and I picked up a Kanger subtank. Boy is the flavor so much better. Anyways, I'm just using it with 1+ ohm builds right now as that's as low as my istick will fire. So I'm in the market for a sub ohm capable mod. I'd like to stick with regulated and variable wattage to make thingk simple. Id also like a decent ohm range on it, so I can experiment with my builds, maybe something .2-2.0 ohm capable. One more thing, I'd really like for the mod to have a charge port built in so I don't have to buy an external charger. Having said all that, idk what kinda wattage i really "need". I don't have any drippers, but maybe one day I'll get into cloud chasing. So I'd like to buy one mod for playing and be done. I'll probably still pocket my istick and pt3 daily just because it is a handy setup. Ive been holding out for the 50w istick, since it's cheap and user friendly. However, I'm starting to think I might as well go ahead and get something better since I may one day get into cloud chasing. One thing I do really want is a spring loaded 510. The fixed one in my istick doesn't like the longer pin on my subtank. Had to replace the insulator with an o ring.

So having said all I can, what do you guys reccomend? I don't really want to spend a fortune, but if I have to, I have to. My local b&m has vaporflasks, zeros and ipv3s for regulated mods above 20w. Supposed to have 50w sticks soon. But they're all $130+ without batteries or charger, except the Istick. I'd like to keep cost with batteries and charger around $100.

You're making the move at a good time. There are countless 'good' mods coming outright now that fit your bill. The thing with mechs is keeping in line with battery safety and the what not. Granted good batteries for a subtank or Atlantis aren't difficult to come by; however, building down to a 0.1-0.2 does put you in a fairly specific range where you will want to spend a few bucks on good ones. A decent clone mech wouldn't be out of reach.

However, I would advise to sticking with regulated mods while you're learning to build and find your way, its just a safety thing. After a year of vaping and garnering reasonable collection I still prefer my DNA mods over larger powered regulated mods, and I use my mechs where most would reach for the 150w regulated and my dnas for all day runners. Those may be out of your financial range ... maybe this from smoktech ..i dont know much abut it: but it falls in your range and meets your specs, smoktech is a well known manufacture and the vendor is also respectable -and its only 60$
XPro M50 Mod, Black
Also istick has a similar mod in the horizon as well for 50$
iStick 50w Pre-Order | Kingly Vapes
Imho I would go for the smoktech one...
Best of luck and congrats dude.

I have, but i dont like the idea of possibly over discharging a lithium battery. Plus, i like being able to check my ohms on the device and adjust wattage accordingly. I have a multimeter, as I'm an auto tech by trade, but that's just more stuff to keep handy in my vape box.

i am a heavy diesel and i love the durability of a mech especially because my line of work is very ocean based

If you go for a mech, don't overlook the reo grand. It's my most reliable setup and has never EVER failed me. Add to the fact that you are using a dripper without dripping? Priceless. I run a bottom feed trident v2 at 0.41 ohms and it's crazy good. 6ml bottle on board and takes my vtc5s. Just a great setup, and good luck breaking one. I could run it over with my s10 and have no doubts that it would still be working. It goes to work with me almost every day because I know I can count on it

30w is good enough to cloud chase, as you can build a higher ohm coil and run more volts through it than a mech would.
Personally I prefer a regulated vape, not just for the safety, but the vape is constant through the life of the battery. Onboard micro USB charging is a big plus, but you aren't likely to find those in mods that are over like 50w because the amp draw is too great for a single 18650, and charging batteries that are in a parallel configuration is not advisable.

If you get a mod with replaceable batteries only buy authentic batteries form a reputable source like rtdvapor or illumination supply. Don't mess with eBay or Amazon. Good batteries are the Sony Vtc series, Samsung 25r, and lg he2s. Each battery is in the neighborhood of $8 each. Also don't skimp on he charger, get a nitecore or xtar. There are a few good batteries and chargers I didn't mention.
I hope that answers some of your questions, I'll leave the gear recommendations to others, but I. Love my Hana 30w clone. They have a 50w one on fasttach

Ummmm.... cloud chasing... that's a broad term to me .,my tugboat 2 on a dna40 at 35w dual coil nickel build, set to 500° will make me a human fog machine. To crank a 0.3 ohm dual coil 24g build to 40w will choke me out.
Maybe I have to harsh of a gag reflex but a true 50w would make me choke,

Also the ipvs have been pretty sketchy on the consistency scale the ipv2 was pretty junky imho..the ipv3 was good and the mini is considered a rough performer by some as well also. At least that's what I've heard and read.
Keep in mind 60$ on the smoktech is pretty decent price for a good 50w mod, if your budget is 100$ that leaves you a decent little stash for a drippper clone and rba tools. If you're looking for a 100w mod the sigelei 100 plus is pretty nice and around a hundred dollars.
I'm still old school maybe, I prefer a much when I'm in the mood to really high power vape and stay on the regulated mods in the 25-35w range for all day needs which by some would be considered cloud chasing btw.
A lot of it depends on build which is why I prefer the regulated for 95% of my vaping. With the tugboats or freak show a good dual coil build at 35w will more than satisfy most.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about over discharging a battery, you can tell that your battery is dying long before the danger zone as long as long as you have a good feel for how it vapes on a fresh charge. I just charge all my batteries every night and I'm good to go. I keep a spare 18650 in my flashlight that goes everywhere with me. Once the ecig 18650 feels dead, it goes in my flashlight, and still has plenty of juice for the flashlight. Mine is a pretty high powered light too. Fenix pd35, 950 lumens, if there's any flashlight junkies here

What's the deal with fasttech? Is it overseas junk that's gonna take 30 days to ship?
Not necessarily. Most of what they sell are clones of expensive authentic stuff for a fraction of the price. Some clones are great, some aren't. I usually look at the reviews of the product on the website. Lots of people buy stuff on fasttech, it's a great way to sample different mechanical mods
