This is the first thread I've posted. Really what I'm looking for is just odds and ends info/tips that can help me be an "informed" vaper. Like sometimes I hit my e-cig and its really dry in the back of my throat. It burns and makes me cough. Any ideas how to avoid that?

Possibly the nicotine level is too high?

There is, also, what I did. Coming from smoking, I was used to inhaling really deep. But with vaping, you get your nicotine differently than smoking. Read this article and see if it applies: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html. It definitely did apply to me. I was trying to inhale water vapor into my lungs. This upset them for some reason. :)

Slow your inhale down and "savor" the tastes more. As smokers, we all were rushing to get the nicotine into our lungs and absorb it. The better "technique" with vaping seems to me to be to spend more time tasting the flavors and that way you'll get the nicotine. My inhale, the vapor never goes straight to the back of my throat. It spends more time in my mouth than smoke ever did.

But, then, I'm vaping bananas right now. And I like bananas! :)

I am using a 50/50 blend @ 18mg nic.

Well, how much is "too much" varies from person to person. I was a fairly heavy smoker but I'm using 6 and 12mg with some 18. 6 definitely in the evenings (if I plan on sleeping at all). But I did run into another vaper here on ECF that had had a similar smoking habit to mine who was using 24 and 36mg with some 48 (which made my eyes bug out :) ).

We had had similar smoking habits but went in completely opposite directions in nic levels as vapers. Don't ask me to explain that one!

In my experience, though, a "burning" kind of sensation is the nicotine. Though, for me, high nic juice gives me a "tingle" of a sort. But 18 could be high for you personally while somebody else would consider it "moderate" or ever "low". I'd try a lower nic level, see if that helps.

Some folk like the "throat hit". I don't. Even when smoking, I didn't care for it. I preferred "smooth". As it were. Strong cigs also made me cough.

Other things to consider are such as are you drinking enough water? Remember, PG and VG make the vapor by absorbing water. And since vapers are inhaling PG and VG, we're also providing some of the water to make the vapor. You mentioned your throat being dry. Definitely if you vape, you'll need more water than you did before you were a vaper.

(Ya know, if you wet your mouth with water and vape immediately, you'll exhale fuller vapor? :) )

And there is always the possibility of a VG allergy. Some people have allergic reactions to VG and have to go to all PG liquids. But a "burning" or "tingling" sensation, I suspect your nic level is too high and you should probably try lower nic liquid.

The vivi novas are top wick devices. If they are held upright for too long the wick will dry out.

So if you stick your PV in a pencil holder for a few hours, you will get dry wick taste. This burns, tastes bad and can cause headaches.

Tilt the PV and swirl it around before you use it and you'll get wet wicks and good juice flavor. Once a wick has been burned, it seems nigh impossible to get rid of it.

I do keep my PV in a pencil holder most of the day, so I prefer bottom wick devices like the EVOD and MT3s.

Sent from my mobile. Ignore typos please.

Thanks SO much!! Your help is greatly appreciated. I will try more water and next time I get juice ill get a lower nic level. I also liked very smooth cigs and always smoked lights or ultralights.

I have less issues with the Kanger T3's because the wicks are on the bottom. Also if you use something like a Vamo, you can control the taste and throat hit better. LOTS of water is needed. When I first started vaping I noticed how dry my skin was getting. Drinking more water fixed that issue. The type of liquid and nic level as others have quoted are also an issue. I am vaping 18mg Dragons Blood now and I inhale 2 long slow draws before exhaling TONS of vapor. Nice creamy flavor no coughing or dryness. Everyone's taste and nic levels are different. You have to experiment to get YOUR right Eliquid and E cig or Mod.

You're very welcome. And vape on! :)

Myself, and folks that I read around the forum, more VG is "smoother" while more PG produces more "throat hit". Some liquid vendors have the option to pick your base liquid blend. Like, oh, Mount Baker. Might be worth trying some small bottles of the same flavor with different PG/VG mixes. I lean more toward the VG side myself because I prefer the "smooth" kind of vape with lots of vapor (VG is generally known for more vapor production... PG is said to carry flavors and "throat hit" better).

Definitely if you smoked lights and ultralights, try cutting back on the nic level. You're probably used to much less nic per "puff" than you're getting with 18.

By the way, if your favorite juice vendor has a 0 nic version of the flavors you like (you mentioned a piña collada I think?), you could mix 18 and 0 in equal amounts and whip up your own 9mg version. So you're not wasting a flavor you already paid for and like.

Nice tip! Simple and cost effective way to cut your losses with a flavor you love that has too high a nic level. It's also helpful when they don't have juice in stock at the level you want. Just buy two and blend.
