can you use protected trustfire 14500 batteries or does it need unprotected batteries

As far as I know, the protected 14500 cells do not provide a high enough MAH capacity to allow enough amperage output to support a boost circuit... which would only leave the safe chemistry IMR types which are not protected but are also not prone to a runaway condition either.
