guys im getting ready to order some wick supplies, and this tank. so will 3mm silica work well on it?

I use cotton so hopefully someone that uses silica will chime in, but I'd think 3mm would be too big. I guesstamate the slots in the ceramic to be around 1.5 mm wide so 2mm would probably work ok. Hopefully some one that knows what size wick it comes with will chime in.

If it was me, I'd probably get a spare head or two on the initial order, then order the silica later.

I got some 1mm (natural color) hemp wick from lovepedal on eBay, and I think I like it. I just coiled two strands, which gives me 4 ends to thread through the holes. I did boil the hemp for two 20 minute cycles, and let it soak for about an hour and a half...

... It's perhaps not quite as fast as the 500 SS on my Cobra, and it seems "thinner", but it has a very nice flavor (DIY VZ Dunhill, 70/30 PG). I may experiment with doubling the strands, if I can get them to fit through the holes.

Is that two wick strands going through each hole?

Nope. Two 1mm strands coil-wrapped, creating for individual ends, one for each hole. I would try doubling it up, but I can't see how it would fit, either in the ceramic cup or through the holes.

( took a couple of pics, but don't have the macro capabilities at the moment.)

wow this is getting confusing because initially everyone seem suggest the original wicks were super large? could you tell me what the size difference is from your wicks from the stock heads?

thanks

I've been trying to research this a little since your post and I've not been able to come up with anything definitive. I've also ran across a couple of post about the quality of silica with some folks saying this type of silica is worth the extra money. When it gets gunked up, you can torch it until it's white again. It looks like it could be unraveled if it's too big.

I don't fret over health/medical stuff, but I've seen enough here about silica and shards that I'm thinking in terms of using another material, and the hemp is vaping well enough that I ordered 4 more 10 yard rolls. It came to a grand total of $9. I'm sure I'll use up the silica wick I have, but probably won't be buying more.

For what it's worth, here's a pic of the hemp next to a Drunker stock head setup. I don't see or feel much difference in thickness or weight. The stock wick may be slightly more voluminous:

awesome, thank you.

looks like silica is a bit bigger, perhaps its 1.5 mm or so, but maybe the silica wick is unwound a bit? otherwise it looks like i can finally start ordering supplies

Be sure to boil the hemp if you plan to use it. It removes a lot of the "woody" taste that people talk about with hemp. I do two 20 minute boils with a water change in between. I wrap it around a stainless grater (the box kind) to keep the hemp at the bottom of the pan so I can pour off whatever impurities boil out. Do a third boil if you really want it to taste "neutral".

Great stuff. I'm back to silica because you can dry burn it, but the hemp is a great vape.

It's built and set aside to soak. 7 wraps at 2.2 ohms, and it would normally be around 3 ohms. I'm now doing my best to wait a couple of hours before trying it. I swear, the older I get, the more like a 3 year old I am lol. (Just turned 70 this month.)

If you sit and stare at it until the 2 hours is up, the time will go faster. LOL.
