Hey all. So I received a Trident from fasttech. As I do with everything I receive I soaked it in vodka along with a Igo-L I received as well. So I left the Trident in there and started playing with Igo-L. Well 3 days later, still soaking in Vodka, I decided to take The Trident out of it's drunken stupor and it looked like this.....

Disclaimer: I am in no way shape or form an expert on metals so this could be a natural occurrence however I have never seen anything like this happen to any other type of atties..... Posts got angry and turned black....Thoughts? Concerns?

Thanks!

With out knowing exactly what is in the vodka and what reaction actually occurred. There are two ways to find out what the metal is one ask the manufacturer what they used or do a chemical break down of the metal. My guess is its like when you got that green ring around your finger as a kid maybe like a copper mix definitely not stainless steel or aluminum. Maybe a tin mix. But oh well right

I do have the 24k gold one as well. But if they were chromed they were machined after any plating was done other wise tbe finish would be smoother than it is.

I'm not sure but I think the chrome is a sprayed on thin coat that will show any irregularities. I think if it was me I'd contact ft to see about a replacement. I'm thinking the plating wasn't applied well.

I'd also try a half and half mix of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to see if it will clean them. That would have the added benefit of seeing if there's any lead in there. (There shouldn't be-things that come in contact with liquid are supposed to be made lead free anymore). Google 'clean brass hydrogen peroxide vinegar' to read on it.

well first we must get into metallurgy to understand whats going on

the posts are actually silver plated and were oxidized by the type of alkaloids in the alcohol, they could also be chrome plated as well.

or it is a lower grade of steel with less chromium and there is a sulfur or chlorine based compound in the vodka. SS can and will turn black in bleach as well if it is strong enough, this is why it is not recommended for cleaning the SS sinks.

remember the main ingredient in steel of any kind is iron, and a higher ferric content even in low grade stainless will allow rust and and oxidation to occur.

do not be fooled some will resist oxidation and corrosion longer then others but in the end all steel will form some type of corrosion sooner or later. many pool fixtures are made of stainless and turn quit black over time submerged in the chlorinated water.

two things I have heard that can reverse this discoloration is white vinegar or citric acid but it is not a simple wipe and go cure.

I don't think an alcohol bath is generally necessary, these are not carto tanks, a nice rinse in warm water and a brush will do just fine get any crap off it. Also I've seen this before when I cleaned my Dud (DID CLONE) in alcohol same reaction. Save your pennies and buy the real thing, that my opinion.

Wait, there's a clone with the name Dud? That can't be good... I wonder if there's a clone called the Lemon? :p
