what is a tobagin? i will probably be outside ten minutes at a time, parking my car and walking inside the classroom and all that stuff. maybe go on a walk for fun to look at the pretty winter scenery.

so it is 10-30 degrees? that isnt too bad i was expecting - 10. i dotn know why.

i cant find any long john underwear here so i guess i will have to buy it there.

are the houses warm? I wont be freezing or anything when i am trying to sleep right? i like to sleep in boxers and a tank top will i be able to do that?

Well we are in the middle of a snowstorm and the temps are ranging from 16F in far northern Wisconsin to 35F in Milwaukee.

Like the OP said - we do have furnaces in our houses! LOL

just found the dairy queen it is on north chicago avenue. I just remembered my uncle saying he lived in south milwaukee

LOL! OK, South Milwaukee (which is actually a suburb community) is not close to MATC at all! It's about 35-45 minutes away.

Yeah yeah, that does sound like Shorewood on Capital Dr. Haha, I actually live in Shorewood. It's a great community and plenty safe. Plus, it's real close to alot of attractions; the lake, Summerfest, downtown, eastside.

I just moved here from Shorewood! Grew up on Morris (my mom still lives there) and owned a house on Pinedale and just moved from a townhouse on Woodburn (just across from Culver's) to Antigo in August!

hmm. maybe it was another college that was right next to his house. I get mixed up between the names. i just went to go visit my uncle and look at colleges about two months ago and we looked at 5 colleges so i guess i got mixed up sorry guys. whatever college he lives next to it is right down the road

No, there is a branch of MATC in South Milwaukee - it's just that many of us think of the main campus, in downtown Milwaukee, when we think of MATC! So, you were right - I just didn't think of that campus! So, it was my bad!

Haha... It's a small world I guess. Do they have an old fashion train and Paul Bunyan statue in Antigo? If so, I have been there. But either way, I believe it's near the town of Lakewood (off highway 32). My Grandparents had a cottage up there, and I spent a lot of time up there as a kid. If you have a chance, you should should head over there some summer day. Its a great little town and they have beautiful lakes to swim in.

If your uncle does live in Shorewood, there is the UW-Milwaukee campus about a mile away. I took some classes there and walked everyday.

oh my gosh 20 below???? do they make you go to school on those days???

Not usually, but that would be extremely rare in southeastern Wisconsin (milwaukee.) Lake Michigan helps keep things cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. If it did get to 20F below, that would be factoring wind chill, not the straight temperature and yes, they'll usually close schools on really snowy or extreme temperature days. Winters have been very mild lately, compared to when I was a kid! Winter is usually over before you know it. but you may find it fun - I can't imagine Christmas without snow! And there is skiing, cross country, ice skating - all sorts of fun things. You really do get used to it very quickly and you'll love the changing seasons (the leaves changing on the trees is stunning) and the lush scenery that comes with living in Wisconsin. We spend a lot more time outdoors than you'd imagine, truly appreciate the warmer weather and when summer comes around, it's off the hook! :D

I think the cutoff for school is around 20 below iirc. I think winds and windchill play a large role in deciding that too. There are usually extreme winter weather warnings on the news if it gets that bad.

There is an old fashioned train museum, but I'm not aware of a Paul Bunyon statue. Hwy 45 goes right through the center of Antigo. We are just 35 minutes north east of Wausau and due south of Rhinelander by about an hour.

January is a great time to come to WI. Haha, we are having a pretty wicked snow storm right now 12-15 inches!!

We sure are! I was on my way home from work this evening and I lost control of the car...into oncoming traffic. I have no idea why I'm still alive. LOL.

However, it sure is beautiful out there right now. :)

Glad you're ok!! 8-o

Yes, my christmas decorations were looking so pathetic on dying grass & leaves - the lights are so lovely on the snow now!

did you like uw milwaukee. I am kind of stuck between matc and uw milwaukee. I am thinking i should go to the community college first and take it easy because i heard it only matters what college you go to for your last year.

but how was uw milwaukee were the classes good and campus good?

I've never been to matc, but I think it has a good reputation for engineering type degrees. haha... I remember that I toured it in HS and someone telling me that it was about 15-20% female students and as a HS male I was not too excited about that.
As far as UWM, I took mainly science courses there and felt that I received a v. good education. UWM has a great union and library and an eclectic student body. I would strongly recommend it.

any advice for a texan on how to drive in actual snow. as far as i know go slower than normal but not too slow. and if driving over ice dont hit the gas or the brakes. anything else?

Wait for the snow plows to plow the roads before you go out. Get some good winter tires. Try to get something with 4wd if you can. Last but not least, crash a few times to learn how to handle sticky situations. Having an accident is just about inevitable.
