This piece here is permanently attached to the top portion

That is a removable support pin, it has an oring in the tip just like the bottom edge. take a pair of vice grips or plyers, wrap a hand towel around the cylinder and grasp with the grips/pliers and wiggle it out. There are no screws or threads on that side so unless someone at the factory welded it I would imagine it is just stuck.

edit: this is not correct

Both ends of my center tube are threaded. figured I would put my :2c: in :)

Had no luck with this thing cannot wrap a coil at all on this noob but can on the DID and phenix no prob. the ground screws dont grip just keep spinning which may be the issue too frustrated to ry any further tonight...

Since you can prep a mesh for DiD and Phoenix it's exactly the same for the Griffin too. But if the ground screw just keeps spinning then at least one of those threads are stripped and you need a workaround for this. All hope is not lost. If you're lucky then only the screw is stripped and the hole is fine, just replace the screw with the one from the fill-hole. If not, you can still get a ground connection by dropping that leg of your coil into the ground-screw-hole and just forcing it to make a connection by jamming a toothpick or something in there with it. You can also make a fat well-oxidized wick that presses against the sides of the wick-hole and run the negative leg of your coil down the side of your wick. Or force a larger screw into the ground-hole and wrap your negative around that screw like a Line-style Genesis connection.

Got my DV mail this morning (very quick ship, thanks Eric!).

I was hesitant to buy this item because of the SS wick, but I did want to see what all the fuss was about.

Let me first state that my only coil/wicking experience came when I bought a Vision Eternity. Both units I got leaked badly due to poor contruction, but that's another story. I wrapped one coil with silica wick, and it worked just fine before I returned the units. That's my sole experience with rebuilding.

I initially tried building it with silica wick. It worked OK, but didn't wick as well as I liked. So I figured I'd try doing the SS mesh.

Let me say that my initial reluctance to try this was totally unfounded. I watched one video online, and then proceded to roll the SS. I got a really tight wick without using a paper clip, just the mesh. I then grabbed the wife's pastry torch, and heated the wick to glowing, then quenching, a total of 5 times. I then did 5 burns and quenches using juice, making sure the wick glowed heavily. As a note, if you're getting the SS mesh hot enough, it will whistle as you quench it.

Not having any rolling papers handy, I decided to try winding the coil straight on the mesh.

2.2 ohms, no hotspots, no shorts. I believe it needs a decent breakin period, like at least one tankful. I'm not getting dry hits, and there's no juice burning either. If it gets better than it is now, I'm going to be thrilled. In fact, vapor production is getting better, and flavor is improving even as I type this. :)

Wow, I do have to say this was really easy, even for a novice to rebuildables. I'd have no problems making more wicks, and making a coil for this thing is much easier than working with silica.

Heck, I might even try a SS wick for the Wyvern too.

gormly posted this in hopes of sourcing u.s. pyrex or glass tanks ;)

still got my fingers crossed!

I have someone who contacted me about making quartz glass tanks for these, so I am waiting on a sample. He is just one of us, so no expectations please, seems like a great guy trying to "give back". I will post more if/when I know more. NO ETA but sounded like it would be sooner rather than later.

nothing definite yet.

Pyrex/Borosilicate/Quartz glass would be very very cool but I can't see glass fitting on the Griffin as it would have to be so thin as to be quite fragile, or have such an exposed lip that it would be prone to chipping and such. Hope I'm wrong...

Even of the famous "Boutiqe" Gennys, all I can think of is the Zen, Bliss, iHybrid, and Cobra that have glass tanks and they were designed for it from the ground up. All the rest that I can recall right now are Polycarbonate/Plexi or Stainless. Overall, I'd rather have even chrome plated metal than PC any day. The Polypropylene "Syringe Mods" that some folks are doing look pretty sweet though, I might have to try one of those. :)

I don't belive quenching is necessary. My understanding is it just hardens the stainless, doesn't help with the oxidizing. Could be wrong, but I didn't quench mine and had no problems.

I couldn't tell you if it helps or not, but I'll be doing it exactly the same way I did it this time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if it can't be fixed with a hammer, it needed replacing anway :).

so just firing it up a few times till it gets red then cools, that's it?
How many? I got a torch today (Yea!) so finally able to make my own (yes, sad isn't it)

speaking of which

if anyone has a few spare moments and they REALLY know what they are doing would you mind posting a text based quick step by step?
something that works for you in terms of oxidizing and number of wraps of coil and how close together. No video or anything there are dozens out there but just a simple step by step?

I'd like to have something here and post it to the description.
