Is marrying batteries absolutely necessary?

Hey everyone,

I just bought a smok GX2/4, which should be here in the next couple of days. I'm curious about the four-battery mode, but not to the point that I want to go buy a set of four batteries to exclusively use with that setup. Is it really necessary to have a set solely dedicated to being used together?

Specifically, I was planning on buying a set of four VTC5A batteries that I'd alternate as two sets of two in the dual-battery configuration. As long as both sets are both equally charged, shouldn't it be safe to use them together in the four-battery configuration, considering they'll at most ever be one cycle out of sync?

This seems like it would be fine, but I figured I'd ask people who know more about this rather than taking any potential risk.

In short: no. It is convenient for having batteries that go bad at approximately the same time though. It becomes a uestion of which is more work? Testing and replacing batteries individually as they go bad, or keeping sets of them straight so you can replace both at once. Me I've tried both and find it's more or less a wash. Do what you feel like

I've had the GX2/4 for a while now and made the same inquiry. I went with 6 batteries, married a pair, and marked and married a set of 4 for quad mode. That is one of the benefits of this mod. For the cost of 2 more batteries, it is simple to change from dual to quad battery mode. Keeps you running while the pair or four need charging. What's not to like?

I have never paired or married batteries for any of my dual batt mods. As long as both batts are the same they get plunked in. I also don't use the internal charging port, they get removed then charged. My wife just grabs a battery for her hitter so its not worth me having to oversee making sure she takes the right one.

Battery marriage...needed or not? Testing starts soon.

I keep it simple I buy 8 batteries at a time and cull any older ones. I number them and rotate, the entire batch has the same number of charges (or really close). I don't pair, just use the lowest numbers available, it works for me. You do have to keep up with how they are placed in the charger, sometimes the order get mixed using different devices.

If identical batteries are bought at the same time and used in rotation at similar loads it's probably not necessary to marry them, IMO. What counts is that they get rotated in and out of the charger in a group and used as a group.

I wouldn't use a year old battery in a mod with a battery I bought last week. I don't mix battery brands and models. I do watch the display on my Xtar VC4 charger for similar charge rates to make sure batteries are charging at the same rate. What I've discovered is that the MAH display remains almost synced if I keep batteries matched in pairs and sets. At the end of a charge the MAH count will be within 10ma on a pair that was part of a group purchased at the same time.

Just for safety's sake I keep the dual and triple battery sets together in separate snap top boxes and use and charge them together for the same mod. I really do think that I could pick any two and use them as needed in a dual battery mod. That's because I know that they discharge and charge in a very similar fashion.

I try really hard to keep mine married, and with a 2 bay charger, it's easier anyway.... I need to put my batteries on better rotation, probably, like using the pair I carry around just to not have battery hassles and whatnot and putting another pair in there instead....

It's not that I'm trying for awesome battery safety necessarily, it just sort of intrinsically made sense for me to do that, at the beginning. Wrap degradation and then what re-wrap color I choose will help me figure out which batteries are newest. I just ordered 8, I don't really need them ATM other than 2 of them, so I may just leave the rest for now until my older batteries get retired. I do like to know which are my oldest pairs, etc.
