Is noise normal with manual VK?

I'm a total newbie, so pardon my ignorance. Is it normal to hear hissing and crackling noise with VK?

I had tried a few puffs on an Greencig before and all was good, the taste and TH with my brand new VK is so strong (sort of burnt tasting) that it makes me cough.

Is this normal?????
