Tonight, waiting at the bus stop on my way home, a couple of girls noticed me puffing away on my 801. I tend to hold it like a pipe, partly to cover the LED so as not to attract too much attention, but mostly because I find it more comfortable.
I heard one of the girls say "If that's a pipe, that is sooo cool," to which the other replied, "Yeah, I can smell it, pipe tobacco smells so good!"
I pretended not to hear because I didn't feel like explaining it to them, but they must have noticed a small grin of amusement sneak across my face. The only thing I could smell was an overbearing sewerage smell from a nearby alleyway (one that always stinks for some reason). It was like a positive version of people coughing when they see the vapour.
I find it highly amusing that visual stimulus can inspire such powerful olfactory hallucinations.
