Is the K100 still considered a decent intro to mechanicals?

I've been looking at mechanicals and reading up on battery safety and the like for months, and a lot of people I've talked to have recommended the K100 (and more recently, the K101) as a lower priced mechanical that's still built pretty well. They seem to continue to have pretty good reviews on vendor sites, so I'm guessing that they're still thought of as a decent (non-bank-breaking) mechanical. I don't want to drop a ton of money on one, only to find out that I much prefer my VV/VW devices, and I like the look of the K100.

But, I thought I would check here and see how people feel about them now, before I make a decision. If anyone has any other suggestions in the under $50 price range, I'll check them out, too.

I have a K100 and its a beast.
Hits well, and fires almost anything without adjusting pins and contacts.
Build quality varies with manufacturers ( there are many) so buy from a reputable dealer.
The mods in kits seem better made than the mods alone ( dunno why, I looked at several).

All in all they are great mods for the money.

That said, my first mech was a SS King clone from fasttech($26), and it was flawless.
It's a better built mech than my K100.

The k100 is still a great mod that can perform like a mod should, but there are options.
