Is the name and look of the product hurting them?

Near a beach in a desert.
We all know the stigma attached to the word cigarette? So I have to wonder if the word should even be what this thing is called that we use. Should we not call them personal vaporizers or an e-vaporizer? Everytime I mention the word e-cigarette to someone that is curious they give me a dirty look and say, "Oh you are smoking." I have to say no..no it is not smoking. So from now on I am calling it a personal vaporizer and when they ask what it is used for I am going to tell them it is a means to help me quit smoking.

We're not smoking. It does not produce smoke but vapor. It does and has helped people stop smoking. It is not a cigarette...it is a vaporizer.

This might be more acceptable to the non-smokers who look at people who do smoke in a nasty way and might make them more sympathetic to our plight of trying to quit smoking and or staying quit.

Here and back
I agree totally, needs to be renamed. Any connotation to cigarettes will have an adverse association. Even the name for this web site, anytime the public sees the word cigarette we're doomed. I don't know how you can stop the path we've started on but it must be stopped before people can take this seriously. Reference the CES Worst of 2010. They didn't have a clue, it was a joke to them and now its all over the internet and more.

I smoked for 34 years and I am just 1 cigarette away from being a smoker again. I like smokers, I met some really nice people out 'grabbing a smoke'. This is my ecig. Like a cig, but with an e. If they give a crap I will tell them about it. If not, they are probably scared of it and aren't going to hear me anyway. Whatever, I know what it has done for me and what it can do for others.

It's useful as a short-term measure to convey the basic idea of a new technology quickly - "it's like a cigarette but it's electronic".

Longer term it's a PR disaster waiting to happen. I strongly suspect that the businesses, etc. that have already banned vaping have done so partly because of the name "e-cigarette", assuming that it's some new high-tech way to smoke tobacco. Likewise "e-smoking", "greensmoking", etc. - all very shortsighted and misguided.

A cigarette is literally a "small cigar", and a cigar is a roll of tobacco leaves to be smoked. PVs are entirely different in design and function, not to mention the huge knee-jerk reaction against the words cigarette and smoking.

It's a double edged sword. The name gets it to its target market but also gives it its disdain to the uninformed anti-tobacco user.

I hate to, but I have to agree with you there. How many of us would be here if they had called them PVs from jump?

I also call it my PV and my NI (Nicotine Inhaler) and make sure that I make no reference at all to the word cigarette or use the term e-cig which does our PV's no justice.

Or as someone else elequently put it - "It is my P.E.N.I.S. (Personal Electronic Nicotine Inhaling System). :thumb:

ROFLMFAO OMG My cheeks hurt from the laughing!!

ROTFLMAO P.E.N.I.S !!!! So when I see a new PV that looks "cooler" than mine I guess that would be penis envy.

See above

Give it a few weeks, there will be a new mod!

Oh the humanity!!!8-o8-o8-o
