There are two sweeteners generally used in e-liquid: sucralose and ethol maltol. In my experience, sucralose gives a clearer, purer sweet (best for fruit and drink flavors), while ethol maltol gives a richer, creamier sweet (best for bakery and dessert flavors). Don't use tobacco flavors so don't know which would work best for those. (BTW, ethol maltol will gunk up coils very quickly, IME.)

I've never tried buying OTC sweeteners, just ordered them from my DIY vendor, so can't speak to relative effectiveness or safety.

I started using EZ Sweets and am pretty happy with it. Highest purity I could find for off the shelf purchase.
Ingredients:
Water, Sucralose, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Succinic acid and Citric acid.

Is it safe? I honestly don't know. Until a large enough sampling of people have vaped for enough time to see the long term effects nobody will. It has to be better than smoking, IMO.

I tried Ethyl Maltol first, and found it to be abrasive.. it seemed to add a ton of TH, while not really sweetening much at all.

Then I went to sucralose, and as a liquid sweetener, it's fantastic.. has a very sweet and silky flavor that seems like it would wrap itself around any fruit or dessert flavor well. And it does.. in fact, you have to be careful, because it's very easy to over-sweeten your juices.. I tend to use 1 drop of sucralose per ML of finished juice.

All that being said.. there are several reports out there that say sucralose is DANGEROUS to inhale. I personally use it minimally and only with flavors that desperately need it, but at the same time, as soon as I have solid recipes on 6-7 ADV's that don't use it, I'm going to stop using flavors that need it. It's concerning.. sucralose is not all-natural, and the warnings about it are pretty stern.

sucralose seems to be the sweetener of choice lately but a little sweetens a lot as with em it's a little more forgiving percentage wise. As far as EM adding increased throat hit I never really made the connection but maybe that's why some of my vapes although really good, after a while my through feels like I have a pin stuck in it and I often will go into caughing fits. I've got to look a little closer into this.

I don't believe that sucralose is even safe to ingest, personally, although it appears to be less toxic than aspartame or saccharin. I have been using rebaudioside-a, a 98% pure extraction from stevia. It tastes awesome and doesn't seem to gunk the coils too bad.

Hey - I have a stevia plant/shrub. I got it as a curiosity (kids like to nibble tiny bits of the leaves).

I've read you can make your own sweetener by steeping fresh stevia leaves in hot water. Packaged stevia I've tried has a "unique" taste, and I assume this would, too - but it would certainly be a pure sweetener. Anybody have an opinion on this idea?

If you use anything other than "pure" stevia, it contains additives. The small individual packages usually have maltodextrin (a GMO) that is used as a filler. The KAL brand is the only one that I've found (although there may be others) that is "pure". The liquid is in a vegetable glycerin/water base but has no other additives. The powder contains only 100% stevia extract.

If I had a stevia plant, I would do a little research as to the best way to extract it.

Somewhere out there
I use KAL (it's the best) brand pure liquid Stevia. It's a 100% natural product in a vegetable glycerin/water base and can be found in any vitamin/whole foods type store. I'd "start" with no more that 1 drop per 10ml as it is very sweet.

I just recently tried Stevia for the first time and I'm very happy with it. I also used 1 drop per 10ml and that is just enough to add a touch of sweetness. I got Swanson Vitamin's alcohol-free liquid stevia. A 2 ounce bottle would last forever if used just for e-liquid, so I'm trying it as a sweetener in tea as well.
