Is this a Throat Hit and where's the flavour?!

Hi everyone. One week in, still off analogues and still enjoying my DSE901 but I'm a bit confused! When everyone talks about 'throat hit' - what exactly do they mean? I thought I understood, especially as an ex-rollup smoker, until I started vaping...

I have quite a selection of liquids - different strengths and flavours. Some of them just seem to strip the saliva from your mouth and throat as soon as you inhale and this doesn't seem to be dependent on the nicotine levels - is that a TH? Personally I hate it!

However I find all the flavours very weak (different suppliers) except for the mints and menthols - they give that strong tingling taste in the mouth that none of the others seem to for me. I have always had an amazing sense of taste and smell, even as a long time smoker, and for some reason I expected to try say lemon and get that full on flavour you get when you smell a bottle of lemon essential oil (or from lemon drizzle cake :)). Am I missing something? Any thoughts gratefully received!

Yeah, that's what I always assumed but I only seem to get the full flavour and TH with the mints/menthols (I've tried 11, 14 and 18mg and I get it to a degree with all). I get some TH with a few varieties of tobacco flavours but some of those do that dry mouth and throat thing that I hate. A couple of fruits have some TH but they taste a bit bleugh!

I've not tried anything higher than 18mg - that seems to be easily enough to satisfy the nic cravings and I get pretty buzzy if i vape too much so I'm a bit reluctant to move up.

I've never quite understood what that throat hit is supposed to be, either; unless I vape my PV too hot, and that I definitely don't like. But I can't say I feel that anything is missing, just that I hear people talk about something I don't know.

As for taste, give it time. Your tastebuds have been covered with tar for decades, it takes a few weeks for them to recover. Mint/Menthol gets through easily, but other flavours have more of a problem. And yes, I thought I had a great sense of taste, too, even when I smoked. But I sure discovered there was room for improvement …

Hmmm I wouldn't go up in nic levels. I just went down from 26mg to 12-18mg and I still get the TH. What type of juices are you vaping? VG does not give much of a TH. It's really a nice smooth vapor hit.

Katy - you must must MUST drink a lot more when you vape - the suspension medium (PG or VG) will dry your mouth out big time and this WILL affect your ability to taste things (also, its not great to have a too-dry mouth). Upping your liquid intake (water, juices, sodas etc) will greatly help with this.
You taste mostly through your nose btw - your tongue can only distinguish very basic things like salt, sweet, sour and bitter - which is why tatse gets affected when we have a cold. If your nose is blocked up you aren't going to taste much - although mints and menthols will blast through most anything lol
It also may take a few weeks (yes, weeks) for your REAL sense of smell to get back to pre-smoking functionality. So don't throw anything away just yet - put it away safely and in a dark place until your sense sort themselves out a bit more. You may go through a stage of tasting nothing as well so be aware of that. In a week or 2 try the 'old' juices again and see if you can taste something different - sometimes this works very well but if the juice was too soft for you to begin with it may taste the same (ie, not much of flavor) in which case you can trade it, mix it or chuck it :)
I also wouldn't climb too high with nic just yet - it may also be the juices you bought weren't 'your style' - a lot of this new habit involves much testing and shopping around for flavors you really love, or just ones that are stronger. I can't really recommend a vendor as I see you're in the UK but the UK sub forum peeps should be able to comment and help with that :)

Throat hit definition...

okay for those of you wondering what throat hit means...

When u take a big puff on a strong anolog cig, it hits the back of the throat, with a kinda warm sensation... if u take too much it kinda burns the throat and can make u cough...

that compared to extra light or ultra light cigs tend to give a lesser hit due to the extra air that comes through the holes in the filter.

I was a strong cig smoker, so I like to have that hit in the back of my throat.

I dont know if that helps but thats what the difference is to me...

Don't give up, flamingkaty! It took a long time to figure out "MY" cigarette (Camel filters) and It'll probably take some time to figure out "MY" kind of juice and/or PV. Try the PG if you aren't currently using it. Try atomic cinnacide juice (I hear it kicks people in the troat) try a bunch of stuff, there are hundreds of flavors, you just need to find the right one. PS: for me, throat hit is that sensation I got when I smoked the occasional camel straight or clove cigarette; like someone with really small shoes kicked me right on my throat, its that feeling you got on your first time ever actually inhaling smoke (for me, I was 5, believe it or not, and it wasn't a cigarette) and you start to cough. It's that feeling, only mellow. Good Luck! ps: if non of that works, try a different PV. Just don't give up!

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm just a bit impatient I guess! Will have to let those taste buds recover...

So far I have liquids from TW and Liberty Flights and both are PG.

All the vaping has given me a drier mouth generally so I am drinking a lot more (being British that includes quite a lot of tea). It's just a couple of flavours that strip out the saliva instantly - not a gentle warm feeling on the throat at all! I think it's ones with a licorice undercurrent (or perhaps clove?) - Virginia and Hotel in particular.

Go easy on the nic Mustang. I thought maybe I wasn't getting enough as I had little TH -until I stood up and realised my head was spinning. I also vape a lower nic late at night as I didn't sleep for three in a row when I first started!

Honestly, I haven't tried the PV you are using, but the 510 is said to help produce great TH. I have it and it kicks my .... every time, no matter what juice I'm vaping.;)

Unless you were a real light smoker of ultra lights, you won't get any consistent or even good TH with a 901. TH = higher nic level and a good manual PV with bigger batteries that provide warmer vapor. The exception would be a 510 but the batteries die down quite quickly.

I started with the 510 and it kicked my throat hard. Then I upgraded to the eGo so now it lasts me all day without having to keep switching out batteries. Heaven!:)

I still think I want flavour more than TH so for now I'll stick with the 901 until I get my tastebuds back and reassess then. If nothing else I'm sure I'll want longer battery life at some stage!

The DS901 seems to suit the way I smoked/vape - lazy, slow and quite gentle, sort of savouring every moment. I hate that rushed, sucking for dear life thing that some smokers do. I'm just sooo happy to be off the analogues for now!

kelemvor makes a good point - I find the 901 really great for fruit flavors but not so great for coffee/tobaccos/really strong flavors. If you stick to the fruity vapes your 901 should perform well, though the TH will be softer.
If youre getting a buzz off 18mg then I wouldn't go higher - usually a buzz means its possibly a bit too high as it is. I get a huge buzz from 24mg - and if I vape it more than a couple of times, I get a massive headache - not good. Its more likely you haven't found 'your' flavor yet. That might be a long haul though - they do vary oh so much.
