Hi everyone, I recently picked up a Protank 2, Protank 3 and iClear X.1. I previously had and still have a AeroTank and iClear 30s. I never use the iClear 30s so we can leave that out of the thread here. But anyways I have the other tanks listed and having a couple issues. I have tried rebuilding all these tanks except for the iClear X.1 because the iClear X.1 still taste and functions great. I have cleaned the iClear X.1 from time to time but overall it's performing great - except it does tend to leak a little from the bottom where the coil/pin screw into the base. This is a little annoying as I hate the idea that juice leaks out and sits on the pin in my VTR but it is what it is.

So anyways along with the iClear X.1, I also bought the Protank 2 and Protank 3. I had already owned the Aerotank and wanted a couple more tanks/clearomizers for my collection and use. From day 1 the Protank 2 tasted like pure crap - honestly. I tried both coils the Protank came with and they both tasted light chemicals and burnt as hell. To let everyone know I did fill the tank up, wet the wicks with e liquid and let the tank sit for around 15 mins to soak in even though I soaked the wicks in e liquid. But,,, it tasted like pure s**t, completely burnt and chemical tasting with both coils. I was really frustrated as heck and searched online for a fix and I found someone who mentioned turning the rubber pin piece upside down which would take away the burnt taste and so I tried this with success and was sort of satisfied. But I still had a strong chemical taste and it was rough to inhale or even take into my mouth. So I disassembled the whole tank and placed the tank and all the pieces to it in vodka to soak for a little while to clean anything and everything. After the tank and all its pieces dried off later I placed everything back together and still the same taste - pure nasty. Next thing I thought I would do is rebuild one of the two coils to see if this would help at all. I used 32 gauge Kanthal wire and 2mm silica wick. I built the coil properly as you should by heating the wick up a little with a torch, heating up the Kanthal wire a little, doing the right amount of wraps and everything. I placed the tank back together and checked the ohms - everything looks good. Filled the tank up, pre soaked the wicks and let the tank sit for about 15 minutes and still the same nasty taste. I have rebuilt the coil for the Protank 2 about 10 times and everytime it taste like crap just like the factory coils did in it.

Now with the Protank 3 I have the same nasty taste of burnt and chemical and I have not even tried to rebuild it yet because I am so ticked off at Kanger or whoever for this nasty crap. Frustrating.

With the Aerotank it worked great and the coils were great - no issues but the day came when I had to build new coils cause the old coils had seen their day. And here we are the same thing, nasty taste and just totally frustrated. I have rebuilt the Aerotank successfully as a dual coil and a single coil. When I say successfully built I mean its ohms are read correctly and it fires up as should but I still get that nasty ... taste. I used the same 32 gauge Kanthal wire and 2mm silica wick and it taste like crap. I have rebuilt this tank around 10 or 12 times and no luck. So unlike the Protank 2, the Aerotank was great when I first received it but once the coils needed rebuilding it taste like crap pretty much. Like I said I have tried doing a dual coil and single coil both. Both built successfully but taste like s**t. I built a single coil with the Aerotank head and also built a single coil for the Aerotank using a Protank 2 mini head - but still taste like s**t. So no matter whether it's a Aerohead being built as a single or dual coil or a Protank 2 Mini head being rebuilt for the Aerotank - nothing is working right. Althought I have had a couple minutes from time to time where it started to taste ok at first but after a couple minutes would start to gurgle and flood.

I really want all these tanks to work for me as I have spent the money on them and really really want to use them a lot but as you see I am unable too.

I rebuilt a Protank Mini 2 and Evod both for my fiance and everything works out great. Taste great, fires great, great vapor production and more. No issues whatsoever like I have with my tanks. I just don't get it. I'm doing the same thing with my rebuilds and nothing has been successful. I'm really bummed here and need some really good advice and help.

As I said I am currently using the iClear X.1 because the heads are lasting a good time with no issues. And I haven't even tried rebuilding the Protank 3 because of the issues with the Aerotank and Protank 2. Again I have been successful with building the Protank Mini 2 and Evod tanks.

Wire: 32 Gauge Kanthal
Wick: 2mm Silica Wick and I have broken 2mm wicks down for flavor wicks

BTW I do make sure to use a mini torch to slightly heat up the kanthal wire and silica wick to remove all the impurities and still to no avail. I don't wrap my coils tight and I don't wrap them to loose but just about right. None of my wraps are touching and the coil does not touch the metal of the head.

Help, lost and need help. Thank you

hello. I am thinking of purchasing one of these rigs but now am not so sure. I'll just guess maybe gaps between the wick & coil? IDK but I will be watching for the answer as well. Good luck!

Thanks, yeah hopefully someone will reply. It makes me wonder why so many have viewed but refused to reply - almost as if there is an issue their afraid to admit too. I'm honestly confused myself and I'm not here to say do not buy because I'm sure they are all great clearomizers/tanks but something is not right here. I don't see that I'm doing anything wrong here so... The Aerotank was amazing until I had to rebuild the coils. The Protank 2 and Protank 3 were not desirable at all with stock coils or rebuildable coils - bad taste and smell. The iClear X.1 I'm currently using and great clearomizer/tank or at least it will be until a rebuild is needed - that worries me. The iClear 30s is great until you want to change/switch flavors or need to rebuild than your screwed and your out of pocket for a new carto style head or whatever.

I have watched a bunch of videos on YouTube and read plenty of write up's on building coils and I'm a perfectionist with everything I do so I'm sure I'm not doing a whole lot wrong. So help and advice is needed here folks.

Budynbuick don't let my words or experience so far sway you from getting any of these clearomizers/tanks but do follow to find out what others say and advice. Hopefully we will both get answers here. But again I do get frustrated with lots of views and no replies.

Ok, apart from tasting like 'crap' are you able to describe better the taste you are getting.

I'm making an assumption here and I'm guessing it's the normal burnt rubber taste that many people get with these coils. This comes from the rubber grommet on the bottom of the coil, the coil legs get too hot and scorch the rubber. After which, that coil will taste like that for a while.

I fixed this buy purchasing some replacement silicone grommets and swapping out the rubber ones and I've not had this taste since...I got mine from here Protank, Evod coil silicone direct replacement grommet seals x 10 FREE UK P&P | eBay

OK first off be a bit more specific on the taste you are getting. Now if its the rubber grommet heads there were some issues with the coils contacting the grommet for awhile and there are still some of those bad heads out there. When you pull them apart look at the top of the grommet and if you find burning throw the head away or get a replacement grommet. Now Vodka will not get the burnt rubber residue off the head parts and every time you vape after that the heat will remelt that residue and keep giving you that nasty taste. The only way to get them clean is to soak them in rubbing alcohol and scrub them and the tank parts. Also any juice in the tank at the time will be garbage due to polyurethane gas contamination.

I thought the burnt rubber taste/smell was from the old style insulator near the bottom of the coil that holds the legs and the fix is to replace that little insulator or use No-Res/Res/No-Res wire to rebuild your coils.

I have to soak my new & newly dry-burned heads in vodka and rinse with water before using to get rid of the manufacturing oils and dry burn/scorch taste. I don't have or intend to purchase any of the dual coil heads anytime soon and I haven't re-coiled any of my heads--only removed scorched wicks and replaced with cotton.

What do your wicks look like? Can you remove the chimney, take a pic & post it? I'm thinking you may have scorched the silica which some will tell you isn't possible but I disagree. I have also had some of my coils develop hot spots that taste really bad--they usually pop right after that happens though.

You can't scorch Silica. However, if the raw mix which is basically silica sand mixed and melted to make the glass fibers was contaminated during the manufacturing process those contaminants can scorch and burn. Good Silica burns white/bluewhite when torched and any contaminants will often burn yellow/red/orange which is why its a good idea to torch wick material before using it. The German silica not only seems to be a better rope twist, but also cleaner.

You have a lot more experience than I do, but I saw somewhere the person twisted the legs so there would be less resistance. Have you tried that? Are you using the same juice flavor every time? Just guessing, maybe it's not good juice. I wish I could help you. My rebuilding skills are pretty lame. I hope you get this figured out soon. Please come tell us when you do and what you did to fix it.

I'm impressed you made the dual coils for the areotank (I think that is what I read). You are going to turn into a really skilled re-builder when this is all over. Love your persistence to get this right regardless of the work and headaches.:vapor:
