You can but you loose a lot of efficiency. You waste heat all the way up the channels also heating the juice In The tank. Using 28 or 26 works if you need to do it. Or twist te gauge you've got to lower the resistance.
Did you play with it, it sounds like you dont have an ohm meter in which case you don't have to tools to get the job done. An ohm meter is a necessity with a mech and rba. Not a luxury... All I can suggest at this time is a 3-4 wrap of 28g with legs. Should be ~ 1.5. I will not suggest twisting with out ohm meter to check resistance because the twist can vary too much.
Twisted 28 should get you around .5 - .7 ; I'm guessing. May have an issue with heating the juice in the tank though, and you have to use a micro coil to get the coil only to glow.
This will be of great help to you! Your total leg length will be ~ 3/4 to 7/8 of an inch if you trap the negative under the ring. I always do a full wrap around the coil assembly on the negative for a level ring. Even an option for twisted wire,(multiple strand)
